I am sorry to use the forum for a call out, but I don't know another way to get this out. A while back while clearing out message boxes here on The Samba I inadvertently erased a PM from someone who I promised I would find a special gas pedal for. After a lot of searching at swaps, calling around, ect, I have found that particular pedal for them, and have it after a lot of looking. They were in New Zealand or OZ if I remember correctly (but not sure). The folks I contacted already said it was not them. If you are that person please PM me I got the pedal you were asking me about Very Happy

Well a box of stopping power showed up today. I thought it would be the fronts but guess they will be here soon. The rear discs showed up, really wanted to go with German on this build, nothing against the "US" makers, just love the quality of CSP, as well as the TÜV certification for other countries, should this car go over seas in its life (to another owner). Took a while to save up the funds for the recent goodies, had to work a lot of side jobs, OT, and sell parts, but the reward is finally showing. Wish my dad could ride in this build on its maiden voyage, but it's looking like it will not be, unbelievably challenging and sad times here. We push forward though one step at a time.

Very challenging day working today. Hot as a oven in the sun, but most of all getting the pan right on the drivers side to rough fit rockers. The big earthquake we had slid the big Tig welder into the pan, which was "no big deal" so I thought. What, a few dents easy fix. Well it took a while to work those "small dents" out, and was much more labor intense than I thought it would be. With this being the first time in 5 years panels see chassis, I guess I should have figured out by now, NOTHING is easy with this project. So, got it sorted and rockers on, inner wings on, fenders, ect all rough in place. Now I will move from B pillars to the rear and begin that laborious and daunting process Shocked. Onward we go, this has been the most challenging restoration out of all of them, which I completely expected, but man it kicks your ass mentally, physically and emotionally. Tomorrow will be rear brakes test fitting. Have a long way to go and there is much more to come, so stay tuned!

Was able to get the brakes on the rear today, CSP system is so very easy for mounting, and sealing. The fit was perfect and attention to detail in finish machining is superb. It was another hot one in the sun, but I was able to stick a door on, and see roughly how things are lining up. Pretty good for a bunch of old stuff. Plight now it is ballpark fit and will get a lot more stressful as fine tuning gets going. I stuck the nostrils in the later model nose just for photos yesterday, but I had fabed a set I will use and graft to this nose. I had been working on a jig till the earthquake crushed it in storage, which would take a late model nose (repop) and make it a lowlight, with proper nostrils. I have one made and need to go backwards to re create jig, but with this project the task should be easier than the initial making of the lost jig. I think I will eventually make 3 or 4 of them to help the community.

Hi Scott,

I've got the same brake setup on mine and for the same reasons, particularly the TÜV certification.

One thing I added to the callipers was POR Brake paint. I painted them red. It looks great. There are other colours.

Thanks for the tip Nic. I have duplicolor caliper paint I was going to use, but I will check out the line from POR, although I am a while out on detailing stuff Sad
Thanks for all the support, BTW your project looks amazing, nice work.

The rest of the stopping parts came today from CSP, in the form of their zero offset front disc brakes, (they were delayed by the postal strike in Germany). Also arriving was a set of different offset spot tongs and some much needed long clamps. This will help with this first fit and alignment, after that it all comes apart and gets media blasted then primed in PPG DP90. Then back together again on chassis for final fit, fabbing of panels/pieces, and tack welding. The final step will be to modify the tilt dolly, adding turnbuckles and different supports, removing others, and putting the whole Ghia body back on it for finish welding and metal work. This project is a great distraction that keeps me sane, and a huge mental motivator for my dad to walk again. I read each of your comments to him and it inspires him to try and get better so he can hopefully help again with this project we started. Looking forward to working in the shop tomorrow after visiting and helping my pops with therapy. Stay tuned slow and steady, this is going to get done.

Scott,

One thing these photos reminded me of is the set-up CSP use for the rear brake. Usually they supply a full kit as a swap-out of a conventional rear drum set-up. Thus if a flexible tube for the handbrake is provided at the conventional drum brake length (or the old one is re-used) , an extra aluminium sleeve is included to provide an extension to the total length. This works OK but you can do better. Dispense with the sleeve and use a longer flexible tube. I think the one from a bus is longer and has compatible ends.

My CSP kit arrived at Christmas and it certainly felt like it at the time. This is a really nicely engineered kit.

The callipers are used in a Golf at the rear and a Vectra at the front. The pads are very common.

Nicholas

Yes Nick I've heard the same, looking into the different legnths. If anyone can offer up support much appreciated. It's not rocket surgery we can get it figured, it's just cable and adjustment length. Very Happy well ok maybe how it affixes at the brake too. Embarassed

In my gallery there are a couple of photos of the CSP rear brake showing the extension tube and how it fits up. it looks like the same interface for the sleeve in the CSP and the OG VW drum brake. I'll be back in Australia on Monday. I'll have a look if I can read any part numbers on my install.

Just stopping in to give props..

Love to watch a complete build like this!
Thanks for taking the time to share.

I'm at the point where I have a whole front clip mocked up and screwed down on my project,
And it's so hard to commit, and make that first weld..

Did not get any time to work this weekend unfortunately. I did though get my wheels back from trueing and inspection. Not all the painstaking filing or strait inning can get a "true wheel", it will get portions of it straight, but to insure the wheel is as concentric as possible a wheel straightening machine and trained eye is the best bet. Stockton Wheel Service has been doing it for a loooong time (since 1883), and the technician who operates the straigtiner and does steel wheels has been doing it for 40 years. I am sure the wheels are not "factory new wheel straight" with no run out after 50+ years of service. I can feel good about the fact they are very close if not spot on straight and safe for the next 50 years. Next for the wheels is the cosmetic portion, making them look good and smooth, prior to taking them in for powder coating.

Just got the new issue of Volks World magazine and there was a great article in the letter section about NOS panels for Ghias, and how they are becoming more scarce. They are out there this resto is proof, but when they are found can be quite pricey. When you find them get them when you can, when these cars get there time in the "Lime light", what can be found will get snatched up, and they will be even harder or nearly impossible to find.

Got a little time last week to work on the car. Front brakes are sorted and just waiting on wheels from powder coater. That was the best part of the week.

Now for the not so good news. Tom my father has passed away. He has fought a tough battle, but he is on his new journey now. I want to express my sincere gratitude to all you in the community who have helped find parts, supported, and most of all added to this thread. Dad loved to hear and see the support from you all, as well as the progress he could not be here to witness. I would be lying if I said I am not devastated with his passing, and knowing he will never ride in the car we started. This will be a tough one to overcome, but this too will pass. Again to all of you thank you very much.

Oh...I'm so sorry to hear that Scott. I know it was something you have been preparing yourself for but when it does finally come it's still very hard to take.

Jacqui and my thoughts are with you and your family today. I'm sure your father is very proud of you and that he appreciated the time and effort you gave to him in the last stage of his life.

I think everyone who has seen and followed this process will know this special project will be a fitting epitaph to your father. Smile
