Hi sambians, while watching price is right today, i became curious if cars were given away back in the day as prizes and if they were, did they ever use Volkswagens ? It might be a sily question but its buggin me . LOL

My guess would be they probably used American cars only due to who sponsored the show.

No ACVWs that I recall. They would have been called cheapskates if they gave away a bug, a Type 4 or a bus, although they could have gotten away with giving away a Ghia. Everett, they used a Honda Civic on occasion in the 70s, and those were still made in Japan at the time. Once, one of Barker's Beauties crashed the car on stage, and the lucky winner of the car drove home in a car with a dent in the fender. I remember this episode well, and if that had been a bug, I would have soiled myself. Laughing They might have used Westmoreland-built Rabbits and Jettas in the late 70s/early 80s.

I remember rail buggies being in the show case show down. Not sure if the person won or not, but I KNOW they've been on the show.

They could get away with having one on the show now. They frequently give away various classic's these days.

The Price is Right absolutely had aircooled VWs.
At Bally's Las Vegas, we have the Price is Right stage show. Before the stage show begins they show clips from the classic PIR episodes. One of them is a red early Bay window. The MSRP was $4400.

Now that the old episodes are all over youtube, we can watch for VW's. I watched a few old episodes to see what cars were on them, found a Super Beetle was given away on 9/19/73. The video quality on some of them are lacking. Let the search for other VW's begin!

They used to give away bugs on Sabado Gigante and occasionally on "El gran juego de la Oca" . I never understood a word of it, but the girls were amazing.....

That doesn't look like Price Is Right's stage to me, nor an outfit that one of Barker's Beauties would wear-- more like Sale of the Century. I find it hard to believe PIR ever gave away an aircooled.

Only VW circles consider old bugs or buses "classics," at least in the sense of something you'd give away on a game show. MAYBE a Thing or a Ghia, but even that's pushing it.
