|
|
I have a 1600cc duel port standard 1972 beetle. When I purchased the car it had a 34 pict carb on it that wasn't running well and would kill the engine when I came to an abrupt stop. I took the car to a local air-cooled VW mechanic and he put on a rebuilt 31 pict carb and it's run a bit better.
However, the carb doesn't seem to be holding up, it's got a small fuel leak along the left side near the throttle (i'm not exactly sure where exactly), and it seems like the carb is too small and is starving the engine of fuel (the car will dog when you give it gas, or seem like it's bogging down).
Should I take the car back to a 34 pict and put up with the pain of trying to get it tuned properly? Or should I keep the car on the 31 and just get the problems fixed?
The reason why I'm so concerned about this carb issue is because i'm supposed to moving down to palm desert in a few week and i'm driving my little buggy down there. I don't want him overheating simply because of a small carb problem and running too lean. |

Much depends on what distributor your running, what condition it ( and your engine over all) is in and how the timing is set.
It's very common that people have "multiple issues" with carb/distributor match, and fuel pressure problems.
Pictures help, or give us the #'s off the distributor. |

Alright, so i took an old 34 that i have that has been rebuilt and had it installed yesterday... the cars seems to be running a little better, however the accelerator pump (i think it's called that...) on the right side of the carb hits the alternator... so when i was driving home from the shop last night, i accelerated to get up to speed on the freeway and my throttle got stuck wide open because it was snagged on the alternator... is there an attachment or adaptor i can put on so the it raises my carb like 1-2 cm? I'll post pictures in a sec..
so random other facts about the car, it on a 009 distributor with electronic points/ignition, it's running an alternator, rebuilt engine as of about 7,500 miles ago... and that's all I can think of tat might be relevant right now... |

since the quality of the pictures is so limited, it's difficult to see what happened. i tried to point out where the carb is scraping and snagging on the alternator in green :]
i apologize for them being sideways. |

You either need to go back to the H 30/31 that clears the alternator, or grind the alternator housing or get the correct "alternator" style linkage to fit the 34 pict 3 that won't rub. |

Howdy there,
Just bought a '73 last night and I have the same bolt-rubbing-alternator problem.
I have never had a bug before, don't really know that much about them, could really use some help.
Thank you!

What is the latest? Have you fixed the issue with the Alt?
It would seem a bigger carb is better. These later dual port cars all suffer from a "flat spot" on accel that's hard to tune out. An 009 my make it worse too. You can enlarge the jets to overcome some of it but the mileage will suffer. One thing you can't easily change its the gear ratios in the trans. They have a higher ratio which means the cars bog a little trying to overcome the load off idle. It's like taking off on a bike that's in high gear, hard to pedal at first but you go a lot faster when you do get going. I learned when using a '73 as a DD just to shift down when it bogged and use a lower gear.
The alternator has plenty of meat on it, you can grind the housing until the arm clears.
When you get settled and have some extra money put some Kadrons on it and it will come alive! |

It's a pretty well-known fact that a 009 and 34-3 is not a good match. Your 009 would play better with the 31pict. The 009 is timed at full advance: 30-32deg. BTDC @ 3200 rpm. _________________ © CJ Industries, Inc.
