What is required to bolt up a Type 1 engine to a 914 5 speed? I'm contemplating buying a 914 that does not have an engine, but has a fresh tranny. I currently own a Turboed 2332 type1. It has a 911 shroud on it. Will it fit in the engine bay height wise? I'm trying to keep the project affordable, and use as many items I already own as possible. I know I'll have to fab up the intakes and exhaust, and that doesn't concern me. Any help would be appreciated..

Check out these websites.......

Those will have people that have done what you are asking, or at least, know how to do conversions correctly.

BTW, you really might want to think about selling your type 1 and investing in a type 4. It's what came in the Porsche and is the easiest way to proceed.

Thanks for the info. I'm sure going the type IV way would be what a prudent person would do, but I'm not very impressed with the dollar to horsepower value a type IV brings. I'll ask over there and see if I'm not kicked off the site. Embarassed

Dollar to HP just depends on your skills as there have been built lots of 2.8L turbo'd type4 that last further than one trip down the 1/4 mile strip.
Lots of good quality parts are around if you look...even a stockish turbo'd 1.7L 914 is a blast at 150hp and fairly cheap to build.

I disagree. Dollar for dollar, there are a ton more go fast goodies for a type one than for a type IV. My 2332 turbo dynoed out at 313 horse @ 14 lbs. of boost. To sell it, I may get $2500- 3K for it. I can't even by the parts needed to build a type IV for that. I'd need to spend 8-10k, and I doubt I'd get near the same horsepower. Shocked

yes, there is a ton of cheap parts for a type 1. The question is your 2332 turbo will last how long? Type 4 motors last even the big 3L ones.....while a 2.1L type 4 120HP FI motor will last 150k.....

I'd like to see someone do this and then post the results, With the right type 1 engine build and correct gearing for the engine it could be a fun car.
Sealing the intake air from exhaust heated air might be easy using a kit used to install a type 1 in a type 4 bus available in Samba classifieds.
The engine will bolt right up (search 901 transmission into type 1 bug)
,I would be most concerned with the tall gears in the 914s 901 transmission , there is a wide selection of gears available but they can be expensive.

By the time you do all that, why not just keep it a TypeIV?

I'll never understand these threads Laughing

What's to understand. I have a turboed engine sitting in my garage. The car I'm buying has no engine. It'll cost me at least 4-5K to buy a type IV in half way decent shape, and even then I wont know if it was built right or has good parts. Also, it may have 100 to 120 horse. So why wouldn't I put a type I with all the good go fast goodies and a turbo? I know who built it, I know what parts are in it, I bought them. I can make an intake and exhaust in my garage, and I doubt I'll spend $200.00 doing it. When done it will out accelerate, and out top speed a 6 cylinder (more horsepower, less weight) and for a fraction of the cost. I don't know why I need to explain this to you.. Rolling Eyes

Sounds like you got it all figured out then.

Me, I'd sell the Type 1 stuff before I messed with a fresh Por$che gear box, cooling tin, custom exhaust, etc.

Well-- you said it, not me.

Post pics when you're done. I'm all for a well executed motor swap.

There is a newly rebuilt 2056 125hp type 4 914 engine for sale in the 914world classifieds....for $3500.

125 hp with shorter 3rd and 4th gears plus 50 series tires makes for a really quick 914. Turbo? who needs it if you staying below 3000 rpms driving around town. A type 4 flat torque curve makes it ideal for blasting around from 2000-4500 rpms...
Need 200hp, get a 911 3.0L six and drop it in...
