Are the entire sides of the buggy really all gone?

If this builder lives in an area that requires a safety inspection for license plates it will fail..Way too much structure removed or modified. Also if he keeps it registered as a Talon and gets in an accident, the insurance co will crucify him. Structural welding may have to go through NDE/NDT testing.

Right now there's a bill going through process at the State House that might be your savior as to registering your ride:

It's been presented before and made it all the way through Committee, but the Governor wouldn't sign off on it, maybe this time's the charm!

Do you currently have a title or previous registration for the Talon? If you do, your best bet is to get a new Massachusetts title in your name as soon as you can. It will work as a fall back position if all else fails. We've run a couple of cars SOMEWHAT similar to what you're building through the Massachusetts RMV, for right now, get that Talon titled!

Well since you asked, LOL. There are so many Manx's and Manx clones around with non-traditional drive trains, hybridized things, chopped up bugs, whatever. If you can think it up somebody has probably done it to a Manx or bug. If you glass this car up it will simply be another one of many and fairly ho hum in my book.

Why not go the extra mile and build a truly unique car by designing and forming your own shell for it? In essence, you'd be making your own unique sports car. Doing this would solve more than a few problems you will have trying to graft a Manx type shell to the Mitsubishi chassis.

Here you go cage building.
First I mocked up the two main hoops with electrical conduit.

Welded 1" square for the bottom sides

Don't look at the wires.

I had the hoops bent and then started to add tubes.
I use blue tape to mock the future tube position.

I think it looks F'in awesome. However, that 1" across the pan worries me. I would suggest something larger. 1x2 mounted horizontally for better support. I'd worry about the pan sagging on you.

As for as the 1" tubing not being strong enough, look at the last picture that you posted of the driver's side rear. The primered grey in front of the rear wheel is just begging for a piece of tubing (3"-4") to be butt welded and run toward the front. It would be low and out of the way and would add strength between the two car halves.
