| Lots of glass work ahead. If you pull it off it will definitely be cool man. Keep at it. |

If this builder lives in an area that requires a safety inspection for license plates it will fail..Way too much structure removed or modified. Also if he keeps it registered as a Talon and gets in an accident, the insurance co will crucify him. Structural welding may have to go through NDE/NDT testing. _________________ Licensed Automotive Service Technician

Dan,
Thank you for bringing this up.
I figured out that putting this thing on the road would be challenging.
Registration and insurance is an area I know very little about.
It looks like you know much more than me about this.
Do you have any tips, advices, solution...
I know there is a wealth of knowledge in this forum, I need help on that.
By the way I am in Mass _________________ New ideas do not scare me, old ones do.

You DO plan to TIG the Chromoly, right? You'll embrittle it with MIG welding & weaken the material at the welds...

Yes, after I am done with tack welding the cage it is planed to go to Ocean state Performance in RI.
Pat is building sub nine's NHRA approved chassis.
He will TIG the whole thing.

Right now there's a bill going through process at the State House that might be your savior as to registering your ride:
http://echo.bluehornet.com/hostedemail/email.htm?h...EEEB8FBB0F
It's been presented before and made it all the way through Committee, but the Governor wouldn't sign off on it, maybe this time's the charm!
Do you currently have a title or previous registration for the Talon? If you do, your best bet is to get a new Massachusetts title in your name as soon as you can. It will work as a fall back position if all else fails. We've run a couple of cars SOMEWHAT similar to what you're building through the Massachusetts RMV, for right now, get that Talon titled!
Luck,

Well since you asked, LOL. There are so many Manx's and Manx clones around with non-traditional drive trains, hybridized things, chopped up bugs, whatever. If you can think it up somebody has probably done it to a Manx or bug. If you glass this car up it will simply be another one of many and fairly ho hum in my book.
Why not go the extra mile and build a truly unique car by designing and forming your own shell for it? In essence, you'd be making your own unique sports car. Doing this would solve more than a few problems you will have trying to graft a Manx type shell to the Mitsubishi chassis. |

The car is titled and registered in my name.
Could I keep it as a Talon and find a buggy friendly insurance broker?
Do you guys know anything about this guy:

Don't get me wrong, I would rather design my own body (I studied transportation design) but I think the safety inspection would be even worse if you show up with something that is totally one-of and never seen before. _________________ New ideas do not scare me, old ones do.

I have a modified HF Kinker. It bends "ok", but for this I will have the tubes bent by a pro. _________________ New ideas do not scare me, old ones do.

This is surely a very special project, DSM - and I'll be following it closely! How are you going to accommodate the radiator, because I hope you will be able to keep the curvacious buggy shape? Bestaluck - don't let anyone put you down _________________ Please say Hi to us at

Here you go cage building.
First I mocked up the two main hoops with electrical conduit.
Welded 1" square for the bottom sides
Don't look at the wires.
I had the hoops bent and then started to add tubes.
I use blue tape to mock the future tube position.
And more tubes.
I hate my tube notcher.
I think I am pretty close to what I wanted.
I rolled the car out to check proportions
What do you guys think? _________________ New ideas do not scare me, old ones do.

| I think it looks F'in awesome. However, that 1" across the pan worries me. I would suggest something larger. 1x2 mounted horizontally for better support. I'd worry about the pan sagging on you. |

| As for as the 1" tubing not being strong enough, look at the last picture that you posted of the driver's side rear. The primered grey in front of the rear wheel is just begging for a piece of tubing (3"-4") to be butt welded and run toward the front. It would be low and out of the way and would add strength between the two car halves. |

I remember when I was 22, and a Product/Industrial Design graduate & a car nut.... wanted to put an Allison V12 into a Mini-Cooper.
Then I had second thoughts about wasting a perfectly good Mini & a perfectly good Allison V12... best advice I personally received was 'just because you can do something doesn't mean that you should'.
This endeavor is begging for a full tube frame, and 400 lbs of lead ballast in the rear, and a very understanding DMV inspector.
Luck -
