|
|
Hi,
When trying to put in the sidegears in my AB-gearbox I found out that they won't go in deep enough to fit the lockring in place.
It's just 3 or 4 mm and I checked if the gears inside the diff where all the way to the sides.
What could it be?
The sidegears count 17 teeth and are 50mm high.
I checked 2 local aircooled shops and they both only had that type of sidegear and never heard of the problem.
Thanks!! _________________ www.volksfahrer.nl

First, try to just fit the side gears without the fulcrum plates, to see if it fits rigth.
(I am assuming that your differential works with fulcrum plates) |

Doesn't fit with or without the plates and/or axle.
It's the sidegear that doesn't go in deep enough. _________________ www.volksfahrer.nl

Some background info might help.
Did the side gear come out of this differential assembly?
Was it okay, took it apart and can't get it back together?
Is this a box of parts you got and are trying to put it together?
Is the diff stock? 2 spiders? 4 spiders? Year?
So you can fit the spacer but the snap ring won't fit?
It's been awhile since doing VW trannys, but I think there are side gears and spider gears with different numbers of teeth. The side and spiders must match tooth profile.
Is the side gear mating to the spider gears fully?
Use white grease and do a pattern test.
Is this both sides or one?
With the side gears engaged in the spiders, you should be able to turn the other side and watch the side gear rotate in the oppposite direction, that would indicate it was engaged with the spiders.
You are there and can feel it, we can't. If it's bottomed out and doesn't fit, then there must be a compatability issue. |

Count the teeth on the spider gears. I bet you have 10 tooth gears in there. They don't mesh properly with 17 side gears. _________________
