PATINA : is a film on the surface appearance of something grown beautiful especially with age or use
2 : an appearance or aura that is derived from association, habit, or established character

Patinas are restricted to exposed surfaces and are fragile (that is, they can flake off). Figuratively, patina can refer to any fading, darkening or other signs of age, which are felt to be natural or unavoidable (or both).

Sure a rusty hoodride can have a certain coolness, but that POS isn't covered in "patinas" just because you've colorsanded thru coats of paint and found an appreciation for cancerous sheetmetal oxidation.

And while I'm bitching.... If the seller says "NO TIRE KICKERS" he's obviously hiding something and would prefer to sell to a green impulse buyer.

Moderator note: I did some clean-up due to arguing and general BS. The thread was locked for that reason.

This has already come up a few times.

Here's the Webster definition for reference, posted in another thread

Quote:
webster says:

Code:
Main Entry: pa·ti·na
Pronunciation: \pə-ˈtē-nə, ˈpa-tə-nə\
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural pa·ti·nas \-nəz\ or pa·ti·nae \-ˌnē, -ˌnī\
Etymology: Italian, from Latin, shallow dish — more at paten
Date: 1748
1 a: a usually green film formed naturally on copper and bronze by long exposure or artificially (as by acids) and often valued aesthetically for its color
b: a surface appearance of something grown beautiful especially with age or use
2: an appearance or aura that is derived from association, habit, or established character
3: a superficial covering or exterior

#1b & #2 (less so) covers vehicle usage and the people arguing came to a general agreement of that at the time.
