PR has an interesting entry:
21 Jan 58 Tank filler cap, Now: Cap with modified ventilation system: recognised by "N" underside of cap. Page K-8
I realise this entry would apply to an 80mm cap and not the blank 60mm cap in your pic. But look at the "N" on yours. Could that mean yours is an OEM cap made to fit the 52-53 tank that was made after 1958, incorporating the update? _________________

PR is waaaayy wrong.
The 10 Mar 53 entry should be Now: 100mm, formerly 60mm.
Then 4 Aug 55 should be Now 80mm, formerly 100mm.
I think the 1959 entry is about the cap venting, not a diameter change
The 4 Aug 55 entry also talks about the shape change. |
That's what i was thinking, about the size. There were a few other entries but i wanted to stick to size.
Bruce - i saw that too. i think my "smooth top" cap is a later generic make.
Some one PM'ed me about having some pix of the cap, i gave my email but have not recieved the pictures yet.

so saw another 60mm tank in another split. It had the above cap. So i'm thinking i've found this (now rare) cap.
Case closed?

That's the same cap I found. I was told it was a Bus cap from the 60s. Any Bus nerds here? _________________

Ok, took pix last night.
VW is a Aug. '52 w/ 60mm neck tank.
Now i'm not claiming this is OG to the car. This is what i have with the car.

Just found this pic I took in July 08 in Seattle. This car's owner votes with you!

My '50 deluxe and my '50 standard splits have their original fuel tanks but the standard doesn't have the lip to hold the flame arrester. The picture below is from my deluxe. I will post pictures of the standard fuel tank tomorrow.
My question is, Does the split deluxe and standard have the same fuel tank or does the standard doesn't have the lip that holds the flame arrester? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

I thought the flame arrestor was discontinued much earlier in 48 to early 49? |

My '50 deluxe has the original tank. But my '50 standard doesn't and it's much earlier. My standard is from 9/50 & my deluxe is from 11/50. _________________ 64 Ghia

Ok. Thanks.
Then to further clarify.. Zwiter and early ovals would
have a 6mm fuel tap. Everything earlier would be 8mm?

I don't know about early Ovals but Zwitter had the 6mm fuel tap, Split had 8mm |
Early ovals have 6mm fuel tap same style as zwitter 's, later oval has different styles but all cars are 6mm from after the time the 28pci carburetor was introduced _________________ https://instagram.com/mr.ogpaint

Does anyone know when this 3 bolt arrangement started/stopped? I’m working on a Dec/49 car that has been fixed with an oval front clip. Thanks in advance.
