With MP3 players like iPods available to hide in the glove box who has actually done a "hidden" system that would not affect the stock look of their car. Hidden speakers? Where if ever? |

Look up some of the forums on suitcase stereos. Some really cool systems in period cases

I hid mine in plain sight.
I had the internals of my Big M radio removed, an amp, fan and iPod jack installed in their place. The jack is on the right side of the radio so a cord can be run to the glove box where my iPod lay hidden.
I can control the volume of the iPod using the volume control on the radio.
The speakers are in a suitcase behind the backseat.
I built the speaker suitcase myself while Wayne Johnson ( [email protected] ) built the radio. |

I still run six volts in mine and do just fine. The secret is knowing how to properly manage your power. For example, I rarely use CAPS LOCK as it drains a lot of power from the battery. |

I installed one of Wayne Johnson's custom 6V amplifiers in my '65, it does exactly what it says on the tin and I'm stoked with it still. It hasn't missed a beat (haha ). Runs through an ipod without a head unit althought you could incorporate one into the mix I'm sure.

My system is much like the one Russ installed. The main difference is I utilized a Brambus parcel tray for my front speaker set up. I used a 3-way Cadence 6",2 1/2" and tweeter mounted in 3/4" MDF and upholstered it to match my interior and color matched the speaker grills so they blended with the material. I also used the "faux" pillow setup for my 6 1/2" Cadence co-axials and for bass I installed a Bazooka NOS8 bass tube that ressembles a nitrous tank which I also painted to match and hooked this all up to a Cadence 5 channel amp (1200 watts) This system is clean sounding as well as a very clean install. I run my IPOD Touch for music selection.
parcel tray setup
Faux pillow speaker enclosure
amplifier
NOS Tank subwoofer
I have since built a amp cover and covered it in matching material. _________________ "Dirty Virgin" '56 Oval Ragtop

I just purchased a Audio Control Pre-Amp Line Driver to install in my oval today, this item is used to increase output from 2v to 7.5v on my source device which is my IPOD Touch.
This is installed just before amplifier with Input RCA's going to Line Driver first then jumping to amplifier from the Output with RCA's, power/ground/remote can also be piggy backed to amplifier. This will increase volume being sent from IPOD by up to 24db
I will post pics this evening. _________________ "Dirty Virgin" '56 Oval Ragtop

can you post pics of the bottom of the bambus tray as well? I've been into vw's and car audio for a long time, your setup is very nice
On another note...
So what does wayne do to the amp to allow it to function on 6V? I'd like to do this, but do not want to run a sony amp... _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |
