Is the Solaire Infrared Grill better than the small Tec Infrared Grill? -- G Sport IIRC.

Solaire seems to have a lot of recent negative reviews. The newer TEC grill has a 100% Infrared burner which seems to work better and allows a lot more temperature control, down to 200F, it's out of my price range though. If I spent $700+ on a grill for the camper, my wife would ensure I'd be living in it permanently.

...this is a little off-topic, but for saving space etc. has anyone tried the little round accessory grill that sits on one of those cheap one burner butane stoves ?

The outer ring is tin/metal but the inside one is aluminium. I find it tends to be too hot but it might be worth the hassle? Admittedly, it's a cheap gizmo, but it does work, and the outer ring acts like a bowl of sorts, containing any grease, to a point. Smile

Very Nice!
I like those stoves, very compact. Only downside for me is that they use a different type of fuel cannister than my standard 1 lb propane bottle, which fits my backup stove burner if the westy runs out of Propane, and also fits my Coleman Cat Heater.

The grill looks functional, but the downside is I avoid cooking on Aluminum (unless its anodized, which maybe that grill is). Also that grill has no lid, which I find important, but a wok lid probably fits it.

Or, instead of that grill, you could easily put a cast iron skillet with lid, or a dutch oven, or even a Wok, on that stove.

Do you have a link to where that stove can be bought, as well as the grill I had not seen before, and what they cost?

I believe the Thai supermaket, Dai Thanh in San Jose, 408-287-3744 has a similar stove for $13, including a little plastic suitcase to house it iirc. (I doubt they would ship)

Thats less than I paid for this single burner, pictured on the right ($19) from Wally World:

The grill on the left, with the skillet on it, is a Safari Chef. Not recommended, and btw, it sounds like a jet engine, not at all quiet.

There IS an adapter to make those cheap "aerosol" butane cans fit anything that takes a 1lb green propane bottle, but it is difficult to find...
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I don't think the aluminium portion of the grill is anodized. The top side is coated with something, but the underside is bare aluminium.
Those butane stoves seem to be available everywhere. I'm in Canada, and here they are $30 from Princess Auto. A couple of times a year, they go on for half price. http://www.princessauto.com/pal/en/Appliances/Portable-Butane-Stove/8254658.p
I find it a good addition to the Westy. It's small, and a good independent backup to the main stove, good for outside etc. The butane canisters are $9.99 for a pack of 4, and each one lasts about 1.5 hours. Incidentally, I also have a heater that takes the same canister...
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

But getting back to the grill, it's more like something you'd have squirreled away just to use in a pinch. It does hot dogs fine, but even 4 burgers are a challenge. In some ways though, it's more useful than the "portable" propane grill that one might leave home because it took up too much precious space. Very Happy

Best camp stove ever:

These things have Viking sized commercial burners that boil water FAST!!!

Camp Chef Ranger II (two 17,000 BTU Burners) - 14lbs. $74 on Amazon

Camp Chef Ranger III (three 17,000 BTU Burners) - 25lbs. $86 on Amazon

I bought the 3 burner so I'd have more space for larger pots & pans when only using 2 of the 3 burners.

Another light weight and very POWERFUL option:

Camp Chef Everest 2 with two 20,000 BTU burners!!! - 12lbs. $99 on Amazon.

Anyone have any experience with this model?

http://www.coleman.com/product/perfectflowtrade-grill-stove/2000004118#.UmKUeCSAH7c

I'm thinking of it since I could grill quickly when I want to....

> my little camping Weber is not a Q, just one of those little black boxes with unhinged lid. It's a few years old and the bottom is permanently greasy, so I'm looking for something more compact and versatile.

same here
it works great for a quick grilling, but being permanently greasy I also don't like having to stuff it in a garbage bag every time I load it into the van, so it won't drip on things.

> I just ordered this model from Amazon

I hope you enjoy it.

Please share how it handles dripping grease from hotdogs and burgers. Thats the only thing I dislike about my cheap black box grill ($29). My grilling needs require a lid.

Great thread, I am in the market for one too, but not willing to give up on my original Grill To Go - I paid $200 for it over 10 years ago, they have since changed the design and now it's terrible. Mine though, I love it. Cook home fries, pancakes and eggs in the am, cook dinner later - wish they still made that. It even came with utensils! This grill reduced the stuff I needed to carry.

I think I may go for the coleman road trip. It's been around for years, the griddles fit in the dish washer, it's mutli-use, had a bag available for storage. A good friend bought his the same time I bought mine. His is still perfect where mine is slowly falling apart.

Having the versatility means not having to dirty pans to cook, which in turn means you may not have to carry them at all.

Coleman now has a new porttable grill out, but I want to see it stick around a while before dropping the $ on it.

This is what I'm thinking:

Jon, Will do. It does have a grease drippings holder so that should be a plus. The reviews said to use foil on the bottom of the grill pan to help clean-up. I'll use it several times this fall for tailgating so I'll get a good idea how it does. For tailgating I wanted something I could use to heat cider and also grill meat. And I didn't want it as big as a regular tailgating grill, more like the size of a standard coleman two burner stove. I hope this fits the bill....

Just to add to the thread, I bought this one from Amazon a couple of years ago, the Weber Go Anywhere Propane Grill. It's a good deal at $60:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Cooks great, cleans up easy, however (there's always a "however")

It's not as compact as you'd think due to the large handles on the sides and the top. It's hard to find a spot for it in our camping gear due to its bulk, and as a result, it's usually thrown in at the last minute and is prone to being dropped, or it rattles around in the rocket box. If it's not packed tightly, it rattles quite a bit.

I try to take care of my stuff, but this poor little grill takes the brunt of our collective clumsiness for some reason.

So, the igniter has completely broken off and regulator valve is now screwed up and it won't allow enough propane through to the burners. It will cook a pack of hot dogs in, oh, thirty minutes.

I'm slightly ashamed of the fact that I'm directly responsible for its mistreatment and need to fix it, but part of me wants to take it to Goodwill and go about finding something else.

I feel better after this confession. Very Happy

Same model I have. It's served me well for 7+ years but I agree with your points about the bulk and mine is now quite greasy on the bottom. (maybe should have lined it with foil!)
This is why I'm exploring options like the Volcano. In the meantime, a Samba buddy is helping me to fabricate a parcel tray to mount to my Paulchen bike rack that will hold dirty things like old BBQs and firewood.

OK. I used this at the Redskins game today and it was great. I'm giving away my regular large tailgating grill... This combo unit allowed me to heat up cider and also cook on the grill at the same time. The grill grate is pretty solid and seared the chicken well. It has a grease tray (small) under the grill bottom to catch what may drip. I put foil under the grill area (with a hole for the grease trap) and it was effective for cleanup. And it is no larger than a standard two burner coleman stove. IMHO this is a winner for my needs. Very Happy

with a dog around that cast iron on the green cylinder looks like a big problem awaiting to happen.. and the dog is a good boy, but man, handle that carefully.

you can always set up the westy stove to accept green bottles in event of a emergency. Wink

but good food and good grills are a great part of camping..
I can get 6 ears of corn onmy Primus Vidar grill ...yum..

Anyone have one of these little guys? A Fuego Element? I saw it on a couple of portable grill top 10 lists from BBQ web sites. Wal Mart has it on sale for about 33% off right now...

I'm very tempted. The Solaire looks awesome and my mouth is watering at the idea of searing, but I cook a lot of chicken, and sausages/hot dogs on the grill and I really need a "low" option.

I just bought the fuego element, and it's fantastic. Very, very happy with the quality, flame control and heavy duty grill surface. I got it on sale at camping world Reg $169, on sale for $69. A few weeks ago it was on sale for $49, and that's what I paid, because the tag was still on it, and they honored the price.

I have had Magma stainless steel grilles for years on my sailboats. They are efficient, easy to stow, and I set a big skillet on top to cook on for breakfast stuff. The newer models now have a hinged lid that is a nice idea. $$ just because it is in the boating realm $$

Mine attaches on the RMW swing away tray that makes additional cooking space next to the awning. This setup really works great. Even if the weather is a little poor I can cook some dishes outside too. Laughing
