|
|
After several years of collecting the proper parts, rebuilding of some I had, and saving my pennies, I finally have the engine for my October 1949 nearly complete.
The car arrived with a Swedish factory replacement engine that was rotted through the bottom, and I had this August 1949 block as well.
We want to drive this car so it was important that the foundation of the engine was solid. I sent the long block to Joe Ruiz and a few months later I got this back:
Things like the carb, fuel pump, and distributor I left to a professional (Thanks Ed Fall at Vintage Werks)
The generator was restored by another professional (Glenn Cheaney at Ace Alternator)
Star coil is from Ricardo at Split Parts Unlimited.
Over time I had collected all the proper sheet metal and repaired and refinished it myself.
There are a couple of details I need to change or complete:
1. Metal plate between the shoe boxes is not installed.
2. Different fan belt (the one on there is a test one for size and pulley alignment test purposes)
3. Fuel lines are old originals and need to either be replaced or straightened and re copper plated.
4. Miscellaneous bolts to tighten to proper torque.
5. Front sheetmetal piece is not yet installed
When all is said and done, I should have a very nice stock 1949 engine for my 1949 deluxe.
I welcome all comments and suggestions. Not bad for a girl, huh?

Just by looking at your motor I can tell the rest of the car is going to look just as nice. It`s all in the details and that motor has it. _________________ CRG

Very nice piece of art
Some over-restoring if I can say, almost all nuts and screws were originally black zinc coated and generator cadmium plated? |

I'm currently building a January 1950 motor, and all I can say is you are doing a very nice job. Those heater boxes are super rare, and very correct. Nice attention to detail _________________ Even my nuts are plated.....

Wow!
VERY nice, although I'd expect nothing less from you Nancy.
Great work and nice to see ALL the correct tin on an engine.... _________________ John Henry

looks really good! what kind of coating is on your manifold and heat exchangers?
there are two things i would like to point out:
- i don't think the grommet on the oil filler tube (where it passes through the engine tin) is "correct" for a '49.
-i do not see a rubber stopper on your thermostat throttle ring, and the ring does not look properly adjusted. PM me if you want an NOS stopper for it. _________________ thebucket: I invested in hoodride, now DBD won't return my call?

What method was used to clean up the case so well? I didn't think hot tanking alone with give such a nice finish...Kyle |

Yes, it started in 51.

Yes, I believe you are correct. I added it because I am not happy with how well the filler cover stays pushed into the stand. I didn't want to be driving along and have that thing pop out of the case so I went with the early filler cover and the later spring keeper. I may swap the cover out for the later 25hp one I have since it has the dimple, and use the smaller one for shows.
Thanks for all the comments. I do appreciate the feedback.

Both have a color blend of the Eastwood high temp manifold paints as does the muffler.

You are correct. I added it because I could see where the tub and rear sheetmetal were worn and I know it will only get worse.

Not sure what you mean by a stopper. My 1949 spare parts manual doesn't even show a thermostat ring but it has mostly info on eary 1949 parts not later. I'll have to check my 1950 version too. |
