The oil lines between engine, filter and cooler
making the gauges fit
Modified the rear decklid to clear the throttle linkage

OK, OK.....my interest is now that rear engine cover! What are you doing there?
When we had 'extra' lids, I'd cut those (metric) louvers off and use 7 on each side of a single grille...like a Carrera...but not 5, not 6....but what is the approach now on yours? Pictures, please? _________________ Bruce Baker

The issue I had is the throttle linkage I have for the 2110cc engine. The lever of that is in the middle and front of the engine and is barely clearing the louvres when in static postion... but touching when you pushed the throttle for 6mm. So I had to lower the louvres in teh decklid so the linkage would never touch:-)
With doing that, I still wanted a more "factory" look so it would not be super obvious to most (non 356 porsche) people that something has been done I'm happy with how it turned out actually! will see if I can upload some more pics of it

was not rrally planning on running bumpers, but bought a set of really worn and rusty bumpers for a BT6 (right price:-)... time to transfrom them!
idea it to get rid of that normal 2cm gap, and just modify thel to fit with a few mm's gap. first thing: cut them up!
and match them to teh body
new upper profile
all done
Same procedure done at the rear:

and after hours and hours of sanding and straightening... finally time for paint!!
Inside of the roof is now bright red, no headliner here!
Chassis painting
and masking again
after interior paint, time to mask the body for final paint
and paint goes on!
check at the end of the paintjob

No way it was ever going to be a full red car!! I will stick with the red inner roof and red interior... looks way better.
Will post a pic of the slate grey versus the red interior soon, just looks amazing _________________ 356 Outlaw built: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=430774&highlight= |

Hello Peter, that color looks great. Are you sure you're going to put bumpers on it. The car looks cooler without them. BTW, where in Belgium do you live ? |

That looks very nice, great job on the bumpers. I have always thought that a more form fit would be better. You might want to think a bit more on the lack of headliner. These cars can be quite noisy with out one _________________ Jack Staggs

Peter,
Thats a lot of work you have done, and yes, the door gaps look great and I like the colour. The complete car so far must have taken thousands of hours thinking what to do and then actually doing it.
Well done.

Thanks for the compliments!
Indeed... I did spend a lot of hours into it, and not only building hours. The planning and thinking how I can make what fit does take up a lot of time as well. Sofar, well worth the efforts:-)
No headliner... I might still reconsider that once I drive it and it is too noisy indeed. I will put the "noise-killer" self adhesives mats on the floor and on the firewall, but that would be it sofar. lets see what the effect is with the metal roof??
bumpers... has been a case of no/yes/no/yes/.... for a while already. Now I had the chance to buy these relatively cheap so I just went and picked them up + modified before paint so I would not risk scratching a fresh paintjob. Still a lot of work to be done on these before they are ready for paint but the overall shape should be there. So I still have all the time to decide if I put them on or not. I like both looks actually... specially when these bumpers would be totally smooth, bodycolor on tight to the body. lets see.
Started on the reassembly:-) Still a ton of things to do! _________________ 356 Outlaw built: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=430774&highlight= |

Peter,
I saw that you were thinking of running 944 brakes out back with a vw trans. Is there a way to do so with a vw swing axle? I'd love to run the set up out back of my 55 with my Berg 5 swing axle!
Peter - Belgium wrote: |
At the rear I wanted to use a 1303S IRS gearbox due to its long gearing. Coupled to that would be the rear a-arms of a porsche 944 with the vented disks
But after testfitting this seems not to be a good idea... unless some drastic modifications are done to the Porsche undercarriage. I do not mind to slice and dice a bit... but this seems to need too much
This is teh Porsche a-arms mocked up and positionned as high up as possible. It touches the bottom of the rearseat and the rearwards chassis legs
Testfitting with a FUCHS wheels. This sticks out too far although getting this narrowed would not be that much of an issue
This is the look with a full tire on... even on lowest car position, this is still WAY too high! And this is harder to get lower. It would mean sectionning the chassis + a-arms.
So my new plan of attack: a straight axle gearbox with the early narrow torsion tubes. Onto these I would then fit the Porsche 944 rear disks.
Still need to mock this up to see how much this would narrow the rear versus this IRS 944 set-up?
And how low I could make it go to check how much I would still need to section the chassis. stay tuned! |
