Peter,
I saw that you were thinking of running 944 brakes out back with a vw trans. Is there a way to do so with a vw swing axle? I'd love to run the set up out back of my 55 with my Berg 5 swing axle! |
Yes, that can be done as well... and I looked at it but it would have pushed out the wheels too much for what I wanted.
It would be a matter of machining the hub so it fits the swingaxle splines + making the carrier for the caliper.

Converted a drain pipe unblocking tool to a guidance for teh throttle cable

Peter- I read the whole thread and didn't see anything about the motor; can you tell us size and specs? Al _________________ On a lifelong mission to prove (much to my wife's dismay) that Immaturity is Forever!! |

The engine I actually made for my cal look 57Ragtop but changed my mind and figureed it would look a lot better in this outlaw:-)
Specs: 2110cc
- a Forged 82mm SCAT crank
- SCAT 4340 H beam connecting rods
- Steve's VW Shop STAGE II heads
- Raptor cam with lightweight lifters
- 1,4 ratio rockers
- 48IDA's on polished Gene Berg manifolds
- chromoly pushrods
- Modified BAS streetsport exhaust on CSP heaterboxes
- ...
a nice little package I think
Lets see what the torque & HP curves will say _________________ 356 Outlaw built: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=430774&highlight= |

Hi peter awesome build. Regtig pragtig. I want to ask you why you did not simply fit the left axle tube to right and the right tube to left. this places the shock mount behind the axle and is how Porsche did it anyway?

damn... to be honest I did not even think of that !!! That would indeed have made it a lot easier (and cheaper)... _________________ 356 Outlaw built: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=430774&highlight=

The bolt pattern to the spring plate doesn't really work that way. _________________ Jack Staggs

Of all the sets I saw... there is always an issue with at least one of the sockets for teh bulb, so need to replace some.
On top, i wanted the stop and indicator light split so found new dual filament sockets i could use to replace the original single (and broken) sockets
removed the original sockets
Modified the holders and fixed teh scokets
and some heatshrink to protect

Hi Peter
I have to apologise as a previous poster said "Not everything you read on the net" is true.
I was quoting a post on the 356 registry forum which stated that both axles and tubes are interchangeable this is wrong due to the boltholes but the shock absorber mount also seems at a wrong angle if you ignore the bolt holes which could possible be made to work by re drilling 2 holes and making an adaptor
Sorry about that

No worries! it sometime can trigger new idea's even if they are not always executable:-)
What can be interchanged - I believe - is the original Porsche gearbox axle tubes onto the beetle gearbox. I have been looking for these for a while, but could not find them around here (and shipping from US was a killer).
Lets see, might still change the set-up based on driving experience...
Thanks,
