|
|
After chasing this Bus for 19 years I was lucky enough to get the ability to purchase her 2 years ago. She had been in storage in one form or another most of that time. I replaced the font suspension, brakes & gave her a good tune up on the Subaru Brat 1800 motor that she has installed. This was great for 2 years. Unfortunately on my trip to BBB last year we took a drive out to the Grand Canyon & hit some snow. When we got home I noticed that the rust that was lingering had hit overdrive. This was all that was needed to convince me that it was time to give this Kemperink's body the massaging it deserved. After about 6 months and 2 body shops She is coming home tomorrow with a lot of metal work performed, some new cool features, & a new shinny coat of paint.
She is now wearing her original colors, from what can be determined from striping the body down to mostly bare metal. Dove Blue & Silver White.
Starting point
Lots of previous hackage
New access door for generator & hot water heater
Not very stock in the cockpit
Scary time.......metal work
Patience pays off though
A lot more stock but still motorhome friendly.
Roofs painted white.......
Pics of the body painted tomorrow when I pick her up. After I get her home tomorrow the next leg of the fun starts. Reassembly will be a long process but she will make it to BBB 2011!
A big thank you to Kris - 65Nsqback for all of his hard work these past couple of months. _________________ Home of the one true split Bus Motorhome |

Are you going to loose the bay beam and empi coil-overs? _________________ '61 rag top beetle, '73 type 181, '66 13 window deluxe |

I was more concerned with getting either a proper subaru motor in there, or better yet a nice big type 4. I never knew it had the anemic brat motor. Im sure its barely enough. _________________ Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.

That's cool. I like the roofs white. Changing the taillights back to stock makes a huge difference. |

I am not so concerned on this Bus with originality since it has been so customized over the years. I am the person who updated to the 68 beam, 73-79 disk brakes & coil overs so that it is safe to drive on the road with the family. The stock KL beam was too rough & drum brakes with this much weight is a joke.
As for the Brat motor it is good for now & will pull the Tehachapi pass without coming out of 4th gear. I would love to have a 2.2 in her though. Maybe next year. BTW the brat motor does not need an adapter plate or a wiring conversion. Just redrill the VW flywheel & add a radiator. _________________ Home of the one true split Bus Motorhome |

Here is some info on the Kemperink conversion. The motorhome interior was done much later here in California.
