I am sure the thread will go away soon because it's not a Vanagon, but I can think of nowhere this would be appreciated better then this bunch. It's on my trailer out front and we just pulled up 10 minutes ago. Your hints:

1 It is German
2 It has a rear locker
3 It is not a Vanagon
4 It is more than 20 year old

I am literally pacing around the house waiting until morning, guys. Literally. I cannot believe this. Simply cannot.

Pinzgauer? I seriously wanted one but couldn't figure out how to sleep 4 in the 4 wheeled version.

I can't take it. Nobody takes home the prize but I gotta spill the beans. It's a 1990 model Audi 90 Quattro! The best part? It's the rare 20V 5 cylinder model!!!!!!!

I cannot believe my good fortune. I was in heavy traffic about 3 years ago in Spokane - an hour from my home. Saw this amazingly pristine 90 in traffic behind me. At some point I realized it was an elusive 20V with an older man at the wheel. I resolved to get his attention and give him my card if we ended up side by side. About 5 minutes later it happened. OK, it happened only because I ruthlessly waded through traffic, shoving my ARB all over the place cutting off kindly old ladies and horrified soccer moms. Anyhow, I rolled my window down and asked if he was interested in selling it. Nope, with a big smile that said I was not the first to ask. Then I said something that made him laugh and I asked if I could toss him a card? He softened and said sure. I sailed one from the driver's seat across my car out the front passenger's window and down into his window on the first try. We both laughed at the random perfection of it and he drove off.

Fast forward 3 years.

Friday he called me. He has 11 cars and this one's in his way. I punched in his address and looked at the car for 3 minutes. Didn't even test drive it. He's meticulous. It needs the injectors cleaned, and an alternator. Today I picked it up.

I cannot believe it. Gold metallic, tan leather, 208k, rear locking diff, winter pkg (heated seats, door locks, mirrors, washer fluid, etc). Original wheels in great shape, plus winter wheels with studded tires.

I'm in automotive heaven tonight! It's nice to have like minded folks to share it with.

DougM

You suck.

J/K, nice score! Very Happy

FWIW, Jason Cammisa did a write-up on that car back in 2010: http://www.automobilemag.com/features/collectible_...ewall.html . Cool

I love special or odd cars. Check out that engine bay for odd. This car is a longitudinally mounted front wheel drive vehicle (not transverse which is typical). Took some cool engineering to do that. Check out the radiator mount because this shoehorned engine was so long compared to the stock 4 cylinder. Yep - that is what you are seeing - the radiator is offset to the SIDE next to the block! Wild car. Wild engineering throughout. The name QUATTRO is spelled out with defroster wires so when you turn it on, the logo appears. Lift a door handle if its under 50 degrees and the door key holes heat up if they are frozen.

Tomorrow I get to drive it off the trailer and wash it and have my first real look at it. It is filthy and we arrived in the dark to put it on the trailer (fit by a half inch on each side - whew). I am sitting in bed reading the owner's manual. The guy changed the oil every 3000 miles, and he hand builds engines for his various vehicles. It was his driver and I saw notes in the engine bay on when various services were done, etc. Can't wait to have a good look at her. Thanks, mods!
