thanks, BarryL. Some of them have come out better than others but I'm very happy with that corner so far...and I'm pretty sure I can do these all up without filler, except in some of the sill areas that I had to weld up. I'll need to fill some of the areas in the corners that I couldn't smooth out. no biggie.
Today I cut out the opening in the rear hatch. I prepped the section I fabricated by welding up all the rust pinholes, cleaning up the hinge area etc. i had to do a lot of trimming to be able to fit the complete unit into the front hole. Only Two pictures but there was about 3 hours of work to get this far and these are just rough cuts:
I clamped it together and scribed out the final cut line and it started to rain so I called it quits. my cell phone pics all seem to be foggy, sorry about that. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

I can't understand why VW had a different rear window for panels/kombi/standards vs the deluxe models from '55-'63. you would think it would be easier and cheaper for them to just have one die/stamping for all models using the same larger hatch window. The larger window would have been much safer...trying to see out of the tiny rear hatch window in a panel is tough. maybe the larger glass was more expensive than the extra steel used on the small window hatch??? I guess they smartened up when they rolled out the model year changes for '64. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

I started separating the rear hatch window section inner and outer. it was a royal pain. I did it so that I can get at the back of the welds to work those areas flat after i weld it in place. I have a suspicion its going to need a lot of work. I got frustrated with that so I started on the other corner window:
drew the rough cut line, this is roughly the window opening at the edges:
Cut it out
heres the new section which i trimmed to size. I'll clamp it in and scribe out the final cut line.
all this in an hour of work. Its been hard to find time these past few weeks. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

thanks!. im getting there! little by little. I have to finish the corner window, the rear hatch and the rear cargo door. From there I need to start fitting the inner window panels. Hopefully that will move quickly as they don't need anywhere near as much work as the outers.
then its decision time! _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

I've been going back and forth, but right now I'm leaning towards a 23 (or 25) window bus. I'll make the call when all the 15 window bus work is complete. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

I remember when you first started you weren't sure about cutting, much less welding. Now, I'd give you my bus and say, "Cut and fix any rotten areas with new steel" with full confidence. |

that's pretty impressive... not sure any work would be visible with a good paint job. _________________ 1964 Turkis Flipseat |

I spent 4 more hours on the rear hatch. i suspected that this was going to be a pain in the ass and its living up to that expectation.
I have the outer part ready to tack in. the inner part still needs some more trimming to get right. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia powered by Subaru

had a couple hours today. The rear hatch has been very time consuming, but I'm very happy with how its coming out:
fitting:
tacks:
a few more:
I just stood it up on the bus to see how it looks:
the alignment is perfect. it will look a lot better once i clean up all the welds on the hatch and corner windows

I bet anyone reading this thread is sick of seeing pictures of the rear hatch...im getting sick of looking at it too, but I'm getting there.
I had a quick hour to work on it today. I finished welding the outer window panel and started on the inner part. When it detached the inner liner panel it came off in two pieces. I got the smaller section of the liner welded in today. Next up is to make the cut for the other part of it and get it welded in.
