Well, it's time to spill the beans... Picked up this 73 today. One of my brother's co-workers approached him, said his neighbor passed away and the family was selling off all his vehicles and other belongings. The dude was 85, had this van forever, he might have been be the only owner? It's definitely been in Massachusetts since 1989.

Went and checked it out, it's a 73 passenger van, with a homemade camper kit. It's nothing special, sink and a table. Not even sure if the rear seat folds down. The son found the middle seat in the basement, so that was included in the sale.

It runs and drives, and it only has 65k for miles, and as far as my brother and I can tell, it's all OG and untouched. 1700 with dual carbs. Leaks a little oil, but the plan is to do all new seals and gas lines.

The only thing I can say is that it's SOLID and very straight!

Looks like a very clean bus. I really dig the hubcaps.

What is the extra pulley, belt, and little pump looking thingy on top of the engine?

I was able to snap a few more pics of the bus.

The old man owned the bus forever. Possibly a 1 owner vehicle. They used to drive it to McDonald's and then go to memorial beach in webster. It only has 61,000 miles on the engine. He did not allow his son's to drive it. Its very solid. Delivered to New York. I'm surprised how rust free it is for a East Coast bucket.

Nice homemade interior.

That's a smog pump. Blows air. I remember that I had to help my mom find one in a junk yard when I was teenager. The bus failed the smog check and the smog tech told my mom the problem was that this part, an air pump was not working. Found one in a salvage junk yard, bolted it on, and then went back for another smog check. Passed with flying colors.

Yes a smog pump. Last of the emission add ons for the last of the carbureted buses. If it all works Id keep it on. You don't see the full kit like that often as that pump gets removed - my 74 included - by owners that dont need to worry about smog kit anymore.

Thats a clean bus, but whos is it? There are two of you posting pics of it Confused

I'm going to respectfully disagree for now; that is probably the only piece of any OG engine that I would take off. Rather, I would disconnect the belt and make sure the anti-backfire/flow valves functioned. (Gotta make it LOOK original while not subjecting the original head metallurgy to blast-furnace-lean conditions…)

Did along distance bus hunt last weekend. After nearly ten years of trying to buy this bus, I finally got the answer I was looking for. 1400 miles and three days later, It's home.

1971 Neptune Blue Kombi, with nearly all original paint. Complete, but with a few dents, a few small rusts spots, and missing rear seats. It does have the original engine (I think), gas heater, rear kombi interior panels, and all of the glass is good. It is overall very dry. I just wish I could have bought it when we first found it. It has definitely deteriorated since I first took photos of it back then.

Seller is a very cool 86 year old guy. Still a working mechanic with some great stories. Unfortunately, the title he had for it is for another bus he has, so this one is currently title-less. I usually pass over stuff without titles, but I made an exception this time around. I'll figure it out somehow.

Photos from "before" cleanup.

That is so sweet, cdennisg!! Cleaned up real nice too. Will you attempt to pop the big corner dent and nose dent out yourself?

Yeah, I will give dent removal a try .Might be able to use the football trick in some areas. I have a friend who, other than being a VW enthusiast, also owns a body shop. I might be able to trade some body work for some mechanical work. I have helped him with some wrenching on his cars in the past.

Picking up this 79 next weekend. All original except the dual carbed 1.7L. Dropped a #4 valve seat. All the interior is there and in pretty great shape. Has rust in the usual places but the floor and inner rockers are solid. I'm gonna source out a head and hopefully get the thing running. Ill get some better picks when I get it home.
