I am thinking 1) the larger displacement fan and 2) the large 48 mm carbs have something to do with the problem. I am theorizing that your engine compartment is running out of fresh air. I know you are running with the bottom of the lid propped open, but try taking it for a ride with the lid off altogether and see if it corrects your problem. You MIGHT need a later lid with more cooling slats in it. Don't forget to at least have your license plate with you!

I wasnt planning on using the stock heater...so would it benefit the engine to plug the fresh air hoses coming from the fan shroud to give the cylindfers more airflow? Or would it be better to let the airflow to the heat exchangers to help cool the exhaust?

if you have heat exchangers, you *must* have airflow....

Yeah I was planning on installing them after reading this thread
Great information. From what I was told the j-pipes need a difftent type of engine tin to prevent overheating.

This is a call out to 1973-up Super owners. If you have pictures of a stock and/or unmolested Super Beetle defroster/ hoses/ ducts, please send them to me so I can add them to the thread. Thanks!

nice job on the info given, my brain is trying to process so much info driving me crazy. the only thing i ever tryed for better cooling was to completely change my tin and fan to the porche styly fan and tin. a guy at the local bug shop suggested it he said vw tin and fan only circulate a few hundred cubic feet of air where the porche style circulates a little over a thousand cubic feet. wanted to know if it was true but either way it solved my cooling problems. i installed a oil temp guage and it always ran 3/4 the way up. once i installed i seen a verry verry dramatic difference in temp and even a little performance boost. the porche tin kit was a little expencive like a thousand dollars but u get fan tin and a generator also. wanted to know if anybody else has had luck with this set up. i know i will definetly be doing this to my 2006cc motor!!!

Cooler weather is around the corner. I took some more pics and will have a better description of the defroster and it's related parts in the near future. Very Happy

Where is the thermostat on a 75 standard beetle?

Is it the new style that when it fails keeps the flaps closed or is it the old fluid style?

Thanks,

I recently bought a 74 Super beetle to which I was told everything was in place. So I looked on the right side of my engine from the bottom and I cant find my thermostat. I had checked both sides of the engine (underneath) for the bellows and couldn't find it. On the back of the shroud I cant find any flaps to which I can play with or anything. I have driven the car a lot and my longest trip being an hour on the highway. The car has never seemed to over heat and never has any issues. Am I missing something here? I'm a total newb with this thing as I am the only one in my family to ever own one. Thanks for the help.

Should be above the cylinder1 / 2 sled tin, below the cylinders. It should look just like the bellows style shown on the first page of the thread. The "new" style was never offered by VW, it is an aftermarket thermostat.

Try to post a few detailed pictures and we can tell you what's missing. From the sounds of it, you are missing a few pieces. Is the fan shroud stock? Pics will tell.

Thanks, Ill try to get some pictures. Everything is stock. I bought it from a shop in Hudson that specializes in ACVW. So when the mechanic said "everything for the motor is there" I believed him. Shoud is stock. I even have the original sticker on the shroud that came telling you about the cooling system on it.

once you need 100% cooling you are golden!!! until then you are overcooling the engine.... it won't kill it(at least not instantly), but it sure isn't best for it....

So this is the underside of my motor that I can see. Nothing is removed I climbed under there with my camera so bear with me on the quality. This is looking towards the front of the bug so the rear of the car is behind me.

Anyone see the bellows? Where should they be? Tomorrow I will take some pictures behind the shroud and anywhere else you people suggest that will help figure out what I am missing. Also Ive noticed that when I do put the heat to as full as it will go (3/4) the heat is still warm but not what it should be putting out. All piping and tubing is in place so thats what led to the discovery of the missing bellows. Sorry for making this post really long.

You're missing the thermostat. You should see this on the right side (from my '74; carbureted but basically the same).

So Ive been driving my bug and I was thinking "how well is this cooling without the thermostat in?" I try to keep it high rpms knowing the fan is attached to the generator. When I got home from work, and doing 20 mins on the high way doing 60 I let the car sit for about 5 mins with the engine bay open. I grabbed my inferred thermometer and pulled the dipstick. It was really hot yet the oil temp was only 115 F. Whats this mean? Obviously im a wimp with hot objects but does this mean my engine isn't heating up to the correct temp without the thermostat?
