Many years ago I replaced my rusted and worn heater boxes with new ones. Despite the fact all new heaters have crappy springs vs. the original stuff, I thought I would get better heat. I didn't. Took me years to realize these new heaters have inferior heat sinks that don't even reach the sheet metal housing. In addition, I suspect he ID of the pipes are just that, pipes, not the shape of the original heaters.
I've seen in the back of the magazines suppliers that sell "heavy duty" heaters. How do these compare to stock? I don't want to spend another small fortune for the same thing I already have! |

The cables to the butterfly valves in my heaters under the seat are broken. How do I replace them? Where can I get the cables? Is it an easy process or a PITA? |

I'm not sure where to get the ACTUAL cable for the rear outlets, but I used one for the heat exchangers cut down in length a little bit. A little over $5 from aircooled.net. _________________ *ASE Recertified Master Automotive Tech*

I woke up this morning thinking about your tutorial to the cooling and heating system. I remembered a couple common mistakes people make, and you may want to consider added them.
I was part of a VW car club back in the mid to late 90s in San Diego. (Actually, a former friend and I started it.) A common mistake I saw was doghouse coolers without the sheet metal duct installed to exhaust the heated air outside the engine compartment. Apparently, people don't realize that this heated air is pulled into the fan.
Another common mistake is doghouse coolers with the earlier thinner fan instead of the wider fan. I'd read about this from Bob Hoover but only recently did I have an opportunity to see it first hand. A neighbor was being foreclosed on. He was into sand rails and had a lot of chrome stuff like fan housings, some spare alternators, etc...
He gave me all this stuff. Later on my fan developed stress cracks around the mounting nut. I went through all the fans I received from this guy. One of them was mounted on an alternator only, the other was fully installed in a doghouse fan housing. When I pulled the fan out and compared it to mine, I realized it was the wrong fan.
I ended up having to buy the correct fan. Two common problems that can lead to overheating and short engine life. |

Yes, and that short pipe is supposed to be sealed by a rubber grommet through the rear cooling tin. _________________ *ASE Recertified Master Automotive Tech*

GREAT write up Paul!!
I keep messing around with lever and window and knob to find the defrost sweet spot but am thinking now I have a kink or hole in the A pillar tube, driver's side---heat I have (enuff to make a rubber shoe stink) wind at the window is a lacking. I find it's the humidity that does me so I'm wiping my winds all the time--gonna play some more now that I've learned a few more things here~!! |

Okay, my car has those little metal pipes, but also, the "bulbs"/boxes on the muffler don't hook up to the J-tubes (it's supposed to be a good exhaust...). How do I fix that? Just extend the tubes down to the J-tubes?
And also, could someone take a picture of where the rod from the thermostat hooks up to the flaps and where it runs with the shroud on the car please? _________________ 1973 Super Beetle

Excellent write up. I'm sure those of us who's heating is working will vouch it's really worth the hard work to get the heating up and running especially in those areas where it's colder. |

the little couplings where the hoses attatch sit into the preheaters from the number 2 and 4 exhaust. that "bulb" attatches to the heat exchangers with a wide clamp. not sure where you could get the official one, but folks have taken aluminum cans and wormclamps to fashion a replacement. _________________

Any recommendations regarding cleaning the heat exchangers? MIne have been disconnected for some time and I'd bet they are full of oil and gunk. Last thing I want to do is pump that into the cab when I fix the system. |

When I cleaned mine, I blew lots of compressed air through them until the loose crap stopped coming out. Then I ran mineral spirits through them, changing their position and swishing them around periodically. I did this for a 9 hour shift at work. Then I drained all the mineral sprits out of them and washed them with plain soapy water (to remove the mineral spirits) followed by a wash of plain water. Then I blow dried them with the compressed air again and allowed them to air dry after that. It smelled a little bit the first couple times I used it, but it was still warm out so I drove around for several days with the heat on full and the windows open. I know the heat exchangers are working even with the heat off, but I did it that way to monitor the smell before I actually NEEDED heat with the windows closed. Really, any remaining smell after cleaning was gone in about 100 miles. _________________ *ASE Recertified Master Automotive Tech*

This may have been answered, and if it has i apologise.
But does it matter what exhaust we are running, i have a aftermarket exhaust (no idea which one) and am wondering if i can still get the heat running?
I am new to all this and have little to no knowledge. _________________ 1973 Bug

as long as your aftermarket exhaust is setup to run with factory heat exchangers, you are good... _________________
