I need some great peoples advice here. I replaced the cables to my heater boxes and all the vents (floor and back seat). I have decent heat in my car on the higway, but Not as much as I would like and I can barely feel heat while around town. Also when I first pull the heater level it takes 3 seconds to actually get heat. When I start off on the highway in the morning I need to go a good two-three exits before I get real heat. So I know im leaking it somewhere.
I have three guesses:
1. exhaust donught.
2. dryer looking pipes
3. heater channels.
I have the passenger side exhaust doughnut thing between the exhaust system and the heater box off. I have sealer this with RTV and a beer can and clamps. Is that affecting my heat?
All hoses are in place on shroud with gaskets. Should I start pulling the dryer pipe looking things to check for cracks? They have not come off since the factory put them on.
Should I start taking the running boards off to look for rusty spots? from underneath it all looks good where the running boards attach to the pan. So is there a chance the running boards are hiding the rust on the sides?
thank you! (sorry for long post) _________________ '74 Super |

Doesn't sound out of line at all man.
Famous line from my Grandfather when I was a kid, I'll never forget it. he gets in the bug, (it was new at the time), with my Dad and I, and we start driving. A few miles down the road it's just barely warm and he starts yelling, "you could hang meat in here!"
Almost 40 years later and I still laugh at that. My wife doesn't get it, not being able to hear my Grandfather's east coast old Jew accent, but you get the point.
If you get heat in 3 seconds, your stuff works. |

Thats a good joke!
Sometimes its 3 second, sometimes its more like three minutes (both situations are on the highway). All depends on the temperature outside and my cars mood that day. _________________ '74 Super |

Also, everything needs to get warm. Do you have the flaps and thermostat? These will help get the engine warmed up faster. Where are you checking for heat? The outlets under the back seat should have a good mount of air coming out. If your checking the windshield outlets, make sure the tubes running up from the heater channels are in good shape. |

Yes I do have flaps and thermo. I think they are getting hung up in the open position since they have never closed fully. there always open halfway.
I check for heat at the front foot wells. My defrosters barely get heat so I think the metal tube in the trunk from the heater channels to dash are also not on properly. _________________ '74 Super |

Nice thread, thanx to ya all.
I have two 1996 (1600cc) and dual carbs from factory Fuscas (Beetles here in Brazil) equipped with this thermostat/grile on the deck lid. ( I took these shots from an old 1974 sun roof German made)
I really want to know what is that for? Some say it is in order to have the single carburetor ( we did have single and double carbs 1300/1600cc models) more ventilated (???) in situations where the internal deck lid's temp are too high. I do not agree with that, otherwise why were there dual carburetors models as my very own beetles, that came equipped with this system on the deck lid?
I seen it just as an outlet for a helping device to have more heated air extracted from the engine's bay as once the grile is open, it will provide more circulation of the internal air. In a nutshell, it is part of the cooling system...
Surely I do use in all my beetles the flaps and thermostats and I thank everyone for such an useful thread.
Thanx for viewing and greetings from Brazil.

I finally got some pics of defroster parts! Here they are:

Does anyone have picture of the center defrost vent piece (upper middle portion of the pic) hooked up without the air box in the way? My 72 super never had any of this air plumbing when I got it so i am trying to rebuild it piece by piece. |

I'm working on the wife's '76. Haven't got that far into putting this part of it back together. If you're wondering what hooks up to what, I've been able to determine that much from various pictures that I've come across on here. I think routing the tubing is just a matter of what works for you.
There are also de-froster hook ups at the corner of the windshield. Basically just match the different size pipe to each other. |

I am not quite sure what hoses it hooks up too, I assume the plastic corrugated ones. But also I have no idea how it mounts to the dash. Does the center defrost vent that is inside the car hold it in place? |

Ok, lets see if I got this picture up load stuff right.
The 'A' connection is to the forward ends of the heater channel that are in the A pillar.
'B' connects to 'B'
'C' connects to 'C'
'D' connects to the defrosters at the corner of the windshield.
It's possible I have 'B' and 'D' turned around, just match the connection sizes together.[/img] |

My heater works down to 40 degrees too, which takes care of spring and fall in MN. Then we have winter, and 20 below zero. Never had the heater produce any warmth at that temp. |
Author never mentioned the factory optional eberschpacker heater. Rare to find and a little tricky to install but I have heard they really warm the car when it gets into the 20's. They are sold for cold country owners. |

Awesome write up and great discussions so far. I have thermostats and flaps on both my bug and bus... I love them!!
My question. For people running no heater boxes (J Tubes) and they make some DIY industrial tins. They completely close off the area around the thermostat and the other side. They let no fresh air come thru. Just hot air from the engine. Example of a completely closed off sled tin.
I have a gap in between my sled tin and heater boxes. Should I close up the open space between the heater box and sled tin? Similar to the homemade Indy tins above. Not quite as extreme as above but a strip of sheet metal to fill in the gap. Right now air and water could be passing thru the open gap and cooling down the thermostat. I would think filling in the gap would help the thermostat perform better... What do you guys think?
Example of the gap. Not my car but mine has the exact same gap.

I am going to be replacing my heater channels soon and I want to get the stock system in working order, but its a baja and I'm wondering if having the engine compartment completely open will make the stock system not very good. Any thoughts?
Thanks. _________________ Multi-year baja project that seems to never end

If you mean not very good as in producing heat, it will work just fine if you have all the proper engine parts like the thermostat.
Without the rear you will have more problem with exhaust smell at stops depending on muffler used.
Of course this might be a good time to weld on stock rear sheet metal.... _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Should be less than hot enough to melt that plastic. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
