so ive pulled off the steering wheel and checked to see if the screws on the turn signal lever were loose and only one is slightly stripped. im not sure if that could cause the high beams to flash on when turning but obviously its shorting somewhere. should i just grab a new turn signal lever?

You need to increase the air gap between the steering wheel and the turn signal switch.

If you look under the steering column at the bolts which hold it to the dash you will notice the holes are slotted.

all it needs is them loosened off and the steering column moved down abit.
wont take much, only a mm or so.

If you go too far the horn won't work and/or the turn signals won't self cancel assuming both still work.

Wait so just loosen the bolts? Or slide the steering column forward a bit? I dont like the idea of loose bolts... Couldn't I just use a couple washers?

Reposition the steering column then tighten the bolts back up.
Sorry I probably should have mentioned tighten them back up after.

I checked it out and I'm not sure how repositioning would change anything as the turn signal stalk is just behind the steering wheel....
