Not sure if anyone in this forum saw this... We usually lurk on the Ghia forum. In General/Chat forum of Samba "A Collection over the years....":

Lots of old Porsches and bugs and Type 3's and a Ghia and buses, among other cars. But, also, a 412, which struck us as particularly unusual... Looked pretty good compared to a lot of the other vehicles. |

I have issues with it. I have been looking at that add for a while.
1.) Never seen a painted FACTORY rebuilt transaxle.....and..paint covers up a lot of potential issues
2.) The ground strap looks like it was connected to something while painting was happening. It was hung from the hook on the top of the case when painted. The mounting brackets, the back-up light switch and the clutch fulcrum were all painted over...as were the stub axles and the plastic diff adjuster locks (it appears they may have covers on the stubs).
3 The crappy worn out tail cone bushing being left on and painted over is not too proffesional.
Just wondering who really rebuilt this for the factory and what they really did inside.
The most important things to replace and refurb on a type 4 004 are actually:
1.) the counter gear shaft and needle bearings. The shaft is a wear item. In an advanced state of wear, the counter gear cluster will also need to be replaced unless you use cartridge style undersized needle bearings (what my current box has in it)...or low friction bushings (like the Torlon I am putting into my other box).
2.) The thrust washers on the counter gear
3.) The thrust washers on the outside of the differential side bearings that set the thrust between the CV flange and the face of the differential housing
4.) The inner thrust washers between the differential output shafts and the diff housing
5.) the dished thrust washers between the spyder gears and diff housing
Note: if you are too late on these last three items...you will need to replace the spyder gears and possible the output shafts as well due to spalling)
6.) The differential side bearings and the pinion shaft bearings
Little else goes wrong...not really even much wear to synchros unless it was driven hard and long in worn condition or run out of oil.
In really advanced state you may need a reverse gear bushing.
I'm not sure I would pay $1500 for a box whose re-builders thought a paint job would improve the build. Ray |

I was also thinking why it's black. But i thought maybe it's just some storage grease or simlar. But as you are mentioning it, i remember that the original ground strap is made of copper, not aluminium. Also the pivot point for the clutch lever is not aligned and one bolt for the clutch slave is missing. So, maybe this is, after all, not so good find... Ofcourse the price is too high also. _________________ My cars: 1972 VW 411 Variant; 1973 VW 412 4d sedan |

Yeah...sadly....for $1500+ I can rebuild/refurb about four of them (as long as no hard parts are bad). Ray |
