I'm not finding much info on the cooling flaps and thermostat for my 1600. Maybe a dumb question. Do I need the cooling flaps under the doghouse and the thermostat? |

Depends on if you intend to actually drive it.
Show cars (that are not driven) really don't need anything.
The rest of us need all of that stuff installed correctly. |

It depends if you want your engine to last as long as the engineers designed it to last.
It will run for years but it will wear quicker and take longer to warmup.
If they weren't needed, they would of left them off at the factory. _________________ Glenn

Yeah great idea till they fail and close up and over heat your motor. I always take mine off when I have the motor out and have never had a problem. |

parrots say this all the time... Poly, I gotta ask ya, how many times have you had an engine overheat due to a failed thermostat? Hell, how many times have you heard of it happening? Stop spreading "urban legends" _________________

Not true when you use the original style thermostat. They fail in the open mode. _________________ Glenn

it's amazing how folks can be talked into fearing something that rarely, if ever, happens, but they still get into that car and drive down the road disregarding the very real fact that driving a motor vehicls is dangerous... _________________

I bet there was one set of the tens of millions that VW produced that jammed in the closed position. But the OE thermostat fails OPEN. There's also a return spring that by default pulls them open.
My proof is all the stock VWs still on the road that have not cooled their engines. Show me one engine that overheated due to the thermostat failing and closing the flaps.
My proof is the 470,000 miles i've personally driven without a problem. Or the hundreds of other VWs i've worked on that had the flaps and never reported a problem.
Just show me one, that's all I ask.
Oh and just to be clear, i'm talking about the original OE thermostat, not the crappy Mexican one. _________________ Glenn

My experiance is, I have never had a problem in all my miles I driven. Never ran the OG Therm. Never had a problem and all my heaters have been great.

Note in the picture of this T-3 engine, that the cooling shutters are wide open.
Here is the thermostat.
The design worked like it should. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Here's a OG thermostat.
There's plenty of them in the classified. _________________ Glenn

BTW, there is a specific length bolt that attaches the thermostat to the bracket. Too long a bolt can damage the thermostat. It is about 2/3 the length of a clutch bolt. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Yes, that would be about right. I did not take the time to look it up in the parts book. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Glenn: Do you mean the "crappy Brazilian one"? from 1973 to 1995 Volkswagen of Mexico installed only thermostats made in Germany, the "new style" thermostats for sale in shops like Cip1 are made in Brazil. _________________ Parts VW
