The resistor normally gets very hot but some airflow from the fan limits how hot. Once the fan motor starts to die the extra heat can melt the plastic. Some people make the mistake of leaving the fan turned on even when the motor has frozen and then the resistor can slowly burn up, sometimes also making a hole in the plastic.
The photo is not very clear but the resistor looks ok still as best I can see. Just test it with the new motor.

I'm wondering if this is due to the old hard to operate blower motor or this just means that it the resistor is toasted and needs replacement

Hi Volks!
I'd like to have some input from the community.
I'm installing the Webasto diesel space heater and I would like to fit it in the front... I'd like to hook it up to the air diffusion system so it will spread in the van uniformly.
The >86 and <86 use different vent holes for the front heater unit...
Do you think it's possible/would it make sense that one of the unused hole of my 86 front heater could be perforated to use the Webasto inlet to spread the air in the cabin....
Feel free to share your idea! Thanks
up to 86 oval is plugged but the round is open
86+ use the oval vent instead of the round

Hey Greg:
That approach will work, but only if you plug the fresh air inlet at the front of the van (the portion covered by the plastic mesh) so that your Webasto hot air is not lost to the exterior or diluted with cold outside air. I am doing something similar with a DIY air conditioning system with the evaporator mounted in the area behind the glove box and feeding into the vanagon air box, which is why I have had to give this some thought.
I am considering making flaps right at the front of the exterior air intake rather than in the air box since the exterior approach will, I anticipate, also quiet wind noise when the flap(s) is/are closed. _________________ '86 Syncro Westy SVX |

| As stated previously, your idea is a good one, but the warmed air will be mixed with cold external air and you will use much more fuel to have an effect. Venting directly to the cabin and adding a few new vent lines is how I have done it for heat and AC. |
