What happens to the straight axle and beams when you guys switch back? |
They all get together at Shasta and burn them in a huge bondfire! While chanting "I HATE LOWERED BUSES"
Seriously though, I think usually they trade the lowered stuff for stock stuff. _________________ 1958 PGSG Standard |

Lowered "looks" and ride comfort seldom go together! Can be achieved but that's more the exception than the norm. _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

So what's up with that license plate? That's a modern number sequence on a '56 base plate. Did you have those made? |

hey thanks, it drives much better as well. I never said it couldn't make it over speed bumps. I guess I should have said, " because of the shitty way it was lowered, everytime I go over a speed bump the some parts of the bus would hit because of the missing torsions up front and the wack adjustable coil overs in back.." As far as the straight axle I gave that to a buddy of mine and the dropped spindles are going up for sale.
David you missed the last "trail bash" but once your truck is up and running, lets organize another one! |

I am going to be raising my doublecab doubleugly back to stock height over the weekend. I'm going to call it one of the following...or some such phrase??
UN-Pimp My Ride
Raise-er-rection
Raise It On Stockers!
Reverse-A-Slam
I bought the bus in it's current condition with a bolt-on IRS kit and drop spindles up front. The tranny is out of a '72 Beetle. I'd never had a lowered bus before, (or bug for that matter), so I thought I'd give it a try and use it for a year. It works pretty well if you are driving around by yourself with an empty load. For my use though, I really need the stock gearing and height. I always find myself cringing going over bumps and dips and have trouble pulling the gears with a load.
I traded the front drop spindles for a stock set and when I bought the bus it came with the original transmission and reduction boxes which needed to be rebuilt. The stock springplates came from some local parts hoarders, you know who you are!
Just to show I gave it a try here is a trip down memory lane from 2011... Things a lowered bus are not very good for
On the way to the Spring Fling, Madera, CA
Hauling firewood on the rack when the back is already full.
Running around the desert with a load on the way home from BBB.
Over the weekend as work progresses, I'll post photos of what's involved.
The first step is to review the sections of the Bentley Manual that apply. If the Bentley starts getting to technical there's always the Idiots book I don't do transmission replacements often so a little review is never a bad thing.

I like "Raise-er-rection". that's pretty good.
Nice looking truck. It appears that you definitely get your use out of it. _________________

Mr. LHG
What colour hubcaps are those?
I have 3 of that same colour that came off of a 60 DC but I've never been sure whether or not they are a stock colour.
Any enlightenment?

They are rattlecan grey. I think it was light grey.
Part required for raising a lowered bus.
Reduction box transaxle, spring plates, stock spindles.
Picked up my brake parts and got the drums turned by Matthew at bugparts.com
Dressing up the transaxle prior to installation with more German parts from Matthew.
Tapping out the spring plate bolt holes. The axle was sitting out for many years so they were a bit crusty.

That may be the first time I have ever seen someone detail the inside of the bell housing.
Parts look great. _________________

The tranny was done by Rancho Performance Transaxle and delivered in that condition. I got a great deal because a guy here in town is good buddies with the owner and he took his tranny and mine down at the same time. _________________ Brian O'Kelly

This basically answers the question to this whole thread.
Nice looking trans. Did Rancho do the reduction boxes also? _________________ Click to view image |

Yes, they rebuilt it end to end. Something I discovered when looking through the box of used parts I got back from Rancho, the tranny had been rebuilt before! It was full of Japanese bearings. _________________ Brian O'Kelly
