It can be done with the body on or off. it depends on your skill level which way you want to do it. It's nice to have the following tools.... "Sawzall", Air hammer with various chisel bits, varioos sized hammers, 4" grinder with grinding disc and wire wheel attachments, Drill and bits and or spot weld bit, air compressor and impact wrench and sockets, wire feed Mig welder, all safety gear, gloves, face sheild goggles welding helmet ect.
There are tricks to the trade for sure...
Good luck, I'm doing a set right now... |

| If you are good at cutting and fitting sheet metal it's not too hard, but very time consuming.Don't throw away the old pan until you make sure the seat rails are the same.If you don't have most of the tools listed above I would not try to do it yourself.Good luck. |

| keifernet, you mention it depends on your skill level which way you want to do it. (body on or off) Is it easier or harder if you take the body off? do you run into alignment problems with the body off? I'm getting ready to try this on my 74 super sun bug soon, and I was planning to take the body off. what do you think? anyone... |

Supers are a lot more work/ pain in the ass to take the body off than a regular bug.
I would probably do them with the body on unless there was some other rust issue to be dealt with that would require the removal... I modify the pans by drilling out the spot welds on the rear "brace" piece and remove it and the "jack slot" as well and weld it( jack ) back on later.... the rear "brace" as it is on the chassis is much stronger and welded in place better than what comes on the replacaent(full half) pans...
The only other tuff thing is the weld up front on the outer "rail" you have to cut the metal exact and do the weld from under neath... since the body is bolted to the frame head (2-17mm head on each side...)
I can explain this further if you need me too. but look at it before you start and you will see what I mean.... |
