I was gonna start on here and ask all these questions like i normally do and said hey why don't i be one of the trial and error guys and see how it works out.

As of getting the bug it was hacked up with wires everyone wire nuts and nothing hooked up for a FI bug i was a big confused and to myself thought i got myself in a deep puddle of hell. So having everything bare I'm gonna keep you updated with my build mind you i have done a lot since i have got it at least you can see from now.

Nice job! What kind of carpet are you using? How are you going to secure the edge?

I went to lowes and picked out a precut carpet.

I found with 3M 90 spray glue you can pretty much glue anything down.

Gonna try to finish it today so far i have lets see

2 cans of 3M 90. 20$

carpet 15$

padding 8$

not bad! Ive been considering this same thing with my 68 but I might miss the short pile style carpeting.

I could go that direction too I suppose. Ive been torn on what direction to go with it for a bit now.

How do you feel about all that? One seem better than the other?

Looks good but........

I would worry about that foam residential carpet pad on the floor pan.

It is open cell and WILL absorb and hold moisture against the metal............
Bottom line......
It will promote rust and fairly quickly at that.

Any rain or snow on your shoes.......
A leaking Windshield seal or rust glass channel.......
A window inadvertently left open in a rain storm.....
A cup of soda / Water / Coffee accidentallly spilled........
Any of these events will signal the beginning of not only rust but...... After getting wet..... A very musty smelling ride.

Closed Cell padding / insulation is the only way to go in a car.

My 2 cents......

Dave

So was that the 18x18 peel n stick carpet squares, or something else? I would love to do something cheap for behind the back seat since i already have a kit for the passenger area.

Just some out door carpet i bought at lowes.
they pre cut them for like 12x8 feet or something.

as for the rust and all that i did use Quick roof under the padding along with rhino liner to deaden the sound and water proof it. To catch the rest of the water they have these neat rubber VW

These cars when new effectively directed warm air to the windshield but over the years PO's have often boogered the system!

You have two levers either side of the parking brake........ The left controls defrost or floor vents.... The right controls temperature.

Make sure that you've got heater boxes on the engine and control flaps.
That you've got cables to both flaps and
also pipes to the body.
Also look under the back seat, do you have the "Y" pipes installed?
If yes.... Great!

Lie under the car and make sure the heater flaps operate by having someone inside to lift and lower the right lever...... Works?

If so go inside the car and look under the back seat at each "Y" pipe. They should have a small wire cable going to each one, this cable operates a flap to open or close hot air to the rear seat area.
Are the cables there?
Do they move when you lift or lower the Left Lever?
If so, stick your finger in the outlet hole and move the lever, can you feel the flap open and close on both of them?
Great!

Now the front footwell outlets.
Are the covers there?
Remove the covers, are the flaps on each Vent?
Do the flaps operate?
Is there a cable to each flap?
If you operate the Left Lever does the flap open and close?
Great!

Now, do all four of these flaps open and close at the same time?
Left
Lever up.... All open
Lever Down.... All closed.

Another variable in this system is rocker panel rot. The heater pipes run in the rocker panel and are prone to rust forming holes in them. When this happens you pump your heat outside!

There are also "paper" tubes that run up the pillar from the heater channel where the door hinges are. One on each side. These feed the distribution pipe system under the wiper shafts.

There is a good tutorial on the heating / cooling system ........ It's long but an excellent read.....

Honestly with all the crap i put in there with the quick roof rhino liner padding and carpet I've never had a better place to put my feet along with it killed SOOO much sound.. i really didnt realize how much sound comes from up front till i did this little job.

Worth it and more worth it to toss it in the carpet kit peoples face.. i can do it cheaper and i feel 100x better about it.

Advice for anyone.. i was scared wanted to wait and get precut kit and all this.. Money i saved and the things i learned doing it worth it.
even if i had to scrap the loss of 40 w/e dollars it was.. way worth it
