weather awareness
Big Sur is currently 84F with a forecast of 90F tomorrow, but by monday it drops to 64F

By the time we get there, who knows, maybe it will have cooled down, some rainshowers would be a blessing to settle the dust a bit, and firm up the trail.. though unlikely

things to expect besides dust (unless it rains). Flies and HEAT.

this means we may want to consider spending the day at the beach, and delaying driving uphill until sunset, we can decide when we meet at the Treebones pull out

so, things to bring include, possible beach towel, bathing suit, and fly repellent

maybe a little Jade hunt..

otoh, it will likely be a beautiful warm evening up on the ridgetop

generally, we can pick our weather based on choosing to stay on the coast, or go uphill

I suspect on Sunday morning by 10am, we will be roasting, and the flies will be out, so likely head downhill by then

on the way North, some of us like to plan a stop at Nepenthe for a burger, and there is also a Bakery in Big Sur I like to visit sometimes.

I get what your saying about preserving the roads for those that actually need them. Even with a tired old 2.1 my van can dig some serious holes. As for the rest, I'm on board for playing it by ear but I will be leaning heavily towards spending as much time on the beach as possible especially if it's hot.

I'm assuming fire permits are required?

But There is a fire ring at a campsite we used last time

Update on road conditions, thanks to our lead Scout, ubercool

the road to this Saturday May 31st destination has been graded, so if anyone in 2wd is interested, this would be a good opportunity to join us

I depart from the parking of lot of Safeway in Carmel at 10am. Let me know if anyone wants to join so I can expect you.

I'm expecting a total of 6 vans. Some are 2wd, lifted and with BFG AT KO tires. Departing from the southwest end of Safeway parking lot in Carmel, off Rio Road at 10am Saturday.

Please be ready on time, fueled and have your grocery needs done by 10am departure.

Last chance for gas is the Chevron at
3645 Rio Road
Carmel‎ CA

The trip is about 150 miles round trip from the Chevron

Fire safety update. I just got off the phone to the Monterey Ranger 831-385-5434

Camp Fires are NOT Allowed at this time where we are going, which is a Primitive Site.

Camp stoves Are Allowed, with a fire permit, available here

Campires ARE still allowed at a Developed Recreation Area or Campfire Use Site, listed in the link above, but that is NOT where we are going.

Plan on NO Campfire this trip, download a Fire Permit to use a portable propane stove.
