weather awareness
Big Sur is currently 84F with a forecast of 90F tomorrow, but by monday it drops to 64F
By the time we get there, who knows, maybe it will have cooled down, some rainshowers would be a blessing to settle the dust a bit, and firm up the trail.. though unlikely
things to expect besides dust (unless it rains). Flies and HEAT.
this means we may want to consider spending the day at the beach, and delaying driving uphill until sunset, we can decide when we meet at the Treebones pull out
so, things to bring include, possible beach towel, bathing suit, and fly repellent
maybe a little Jade hunt..
otoh, it will likely be a beautiful warm evening up on the ridgetop
generally, we can pick our weather based on choosing to stay on the coast, or go uphill
I suspect on Sunday morning by 10am, we will be roasting, and the flies will be out, so likely head downhill by then
on the way North, some of us like to plan a stop at Nepenthe for a burger, and there is also a Bakery in Big Sur I like to visit sometimes.
just sharing some thoughts, looking forward to the meetup _________________ My Soapboxes: Inflation; Handling; Gearing; Decoupling; Swepco |

I get what your saying about preserving the roads for those that actually need them. Even with a tired old 2.1 my van can dig some serious holes. As for the rest, I'm on board for playing it by ear but I will be leaning heavily towards spending as much time on the beach as possible especially if it's hot.
I'm assuming fire permits are required? |

Whelp, I apologize for wasting your brain power and time, but my 30th-1st just got eaten up by life. So, all the concern about me and my van's slow painful death and residential dusty road destruction is nil :-/
Bummed. Was really looking forward to getting a first hand, Jon Slider tour of the Van-friendly spots in Big Sur.
On the bright side, ya'll will be able to off-road to your hearts delight now without any tug on your conscience
When the dust settles on my end, I'll prompt another voyage down the coast. Calendar is pretty flexible come June/July.
Enjoy the adventure, Jameel (sp?) and Jon! Soak up some extra Big Sur for all the homies who can't. _________________ 1986 WBX (Tin Top Camper) |

Most of CA is on very high danger fire status as of two weeks ago.
I think only the two most north-westerly counties (coastal) are not on the highest alert.
Orange, instead of red... for those two.
Personally I'd not even consider a campfire this season.
Its a serious tinderbox out there....
Sounds like a fun drive though!

thanks for your input Jim
and I agree about the extreme fire danger conditions
I also agree there is really no need for a campfire at this time
but, since I like to speak factually, and quote my sources, I called the Monterey Ranger District at 831-385-5434 and was told, to my great suprise, that YES campfires are allowed at this time in established fire rings only, as the permit I linked above says.
I then called back, and said I was talking about wilderness areas, with only rocks around a fire pit. Not at a pay campground, which also has metal fire rings. Again they said YES you can have a fire in the wilderness areas, even if the fire ring is rock, not metal, and even if the ring has no grate. I think thats NUTS! But thats what they said
fwiw, Pruitt Ridge actually has some remote campsites with metal fire rings and grates, which is imo a step above a fire pit on the ground with rocks around it.
so if Im misinformed, please educate me further.
I also checked the website link for Current Fire Restrictions at
http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/lpnf/home/?cid=stelprdb5401877
and there is not anything posted there that says Fires are currently forbidden.
so, at the moment I believe we Can have a fire, even though I agree it is a very dangerous idea and dont actually see any need to do so.
Phaedrus, thanks for your update, PM me any time for more info on where to free camp along Nacimiento Fergusson, and fwiw, there are NO fire rings along the road, you should definitely NOT have a campfire on the ground.
I strongly recommend anyone considering a campfire, obtain a fire permit from the link I gave earlier, and follow its directions.
I also recommend you contact the Ranger yourself and get your info from the source, not just take my word for it. Especially since conditions may change between today and whenever you actually go camping.
Again, even though fires ARE allowed, I do NOT recommend it. _________________ My Soapboxes: Inflation; Handling; Gearing; Decoupling; Swepco |

Agreed, Jon!
I am surprised that fires are still "allowed".. particularly with the one raging in Carlsbad as an example to what this summer could look like.
.. and I am a little sensitive to this subject after seeing what the Rim Fire of last year did to the area north of 120, south of 108 in the Sierra. _________________ -89 GL Westy, SVX.. finally.

total agreement, I am VERY sensitive about fire danger
as it happens, my son lives in Carlsbad, and is currently evacuated from his home. The Poinsettia fire started 3/4 mile north east of him. By luck there is a golf course between them, and the fire skipped his development, and burned homes just 1.5 miles west of his.
Ive also lived through several of the fires that ravaged Santa Barbara, including the Sycamore fire, that skipped over my house on Coyote Road.
Fires are fickle, they hop skip and jump. Sometimes the house next door burns to the ground, leaving others untouched.
Similar experience in New Mexico, during the Bandelier fire in Los Alamos.
Im glad were talking about this, fire awareness, leave no trace, and responsible use of our resources when camping is vital to the safety of all of us. _________________ My Soapboxes: Inflation; Handling; Gearing; Decoupling; Swepco |

I'm expecting a total of 6 vans. Some are 2wd, lifted and with BFG AT KO tires. Departing from the southwest end of Safeway parking lot in Carmel, off Rio Road at 10am Saturday.
Please be ready on time, fueled and have your grocery needs done by 10am departure.
Last chance for gas is the Chevron at
3645 Rio Road
Carmel CA
The trip is about 150 miles round trip from the Chevron _________________ My Soapboxes: Inflation; Handling; Gearing; Decoupling; Swepco |

Fire safety update. I just got off the phone to the Monterey Ranger 831-385-5434
Camp Fires are NOT Allowed at this time where we are going, which is a Primitive Site.
Camp stoves Are Allowed, with a fire permit, available here
http://www.fs.usda.gov/detailfull/lpnf/home/?cid=stelprdb5193333
Campires ARE still allowed at a Developed Recreation Area or Campfire Use Site, listed in the link above, but that is NOT where we are going.
Plan on NO Campfire this trip, download a Fire Permit to use a portable propane stove. _________________ My Soapboxes: Inflation; Handling; Gearing; Decoupling; Swepco |
