Well, my front end rebuild is coming right along. My TRW steering box is out has been opened, refilled with grease and put back together. No problems so far. Prior, I have a suspicion that the box was too tight. Currently it is moving more freely than before and not "pinching". What I am curious about is this: When I grab the steering coupler and turn the column shaft the action is easy and smooth, the pitman arm rotates nicely back and forth. I wonder... if I can turn things this easily is this gonna translate into steering slop when driving? In other words, do I want to feel a lot of resistance when I twist the coupler or do I want it easy and buttery smooth like it is now. I am aware that there is going to be alot more mechanical advantage when the coupler attaches back onto the steering column and steering wheel. Any thoughts on how much resistance I should feel just hand turning the unit? Thanks everyone, your hints/tips have made this whole process actually fun and not a miserable mystery.

The VW manual specifiies the amount of backlash in the steering by measurement at the steering wheel rim. Get it on the car an measure at the wheel rim. You can take up adjustment to some extent after teh box is installed by turning the locked down screws.

Check here and adjust, wheels off ground and steering wheel turned 90 left or right.

Thanks for the replies. Seems I need to put the front end back together and then make the appropriate adjustments. I appreciate the resources and input.
