Great work on the bumpers Pip! could you make a new front one for me as well?
My #225 is coming along nicely as well - we seem to be at about the same stage now. Mathias and the Grundmanns did a fantastic job in sorting out the aluminum after exetensive steel-reconstruction here in Norway - it is indeed looking like a banana again now:

Pip,
Pull out your license lights and note the raised mounting points on the back of them... they make these lights a tad wobbly when mounted underneath that "eyebrow" you are fabricating. We ended up creating tiny indentations in the actual hood aluminum to allow the license lights to sit flush with the hood. Also note that when you tighten them down... they are flat on the back... whereas the hood is curved. So when you go to assemble the car... this will create an issue with how the "eyebrow" fits the hood.... but it is not the eyebrow creating the issue... it is the license lights.
I would suggest pre-assembling all of this area with the rubber beading, the eyebrow, and the license lights... before you prime and paint so that you can see the issues that arise.
If you are missing these license lights... I think they are the same as some period German military lights.
Spend more time here than you think is necessary... it is a tough one to get right.
Below are photos of the damaged rear hood on my car when we cut that section of the hood off... and the damaged original eyebrow. Then another shot of the after where we rebuilt both of these sections.
also... for those who don't really know these cars... there are four air intake holes under this rear "eyebrow" and between these four holes are the mounting points for the three license light assemblies. You can see this in the top photo below. Beeskows get some of their air from these holes and the balance comes in from around the perimeter of the hood... the "gap" area.
Eric

Ya Eric,
That eyebrow was a bitch, I ended up modifying the light bases making them flush.. still a tight fit, May go with a lower profile light all together...
I looked at every Rometsch picture I could find, mags, internet, seems their all different.. I went with what looks best, to me. Same profile as the bumper..

Car is looking truly awesome! Watch the points on your aluminum side trim... Your's seems a little too rounded in front in the photo you show.. it's not just a "fold over and file it off" type of end... it is a pointy little sucker that requires cutting a skinny V down the center, pointing and then welding... You may want to physically look at some of the other cars before you finish out the trim. especially how the trim works around the door gaps. We overrestored ( thus my name on samba) the trim on my car in this area... filling in the area where the factory simply cut the trim at an angle. Its not correct... but it looks a lot better than the orig hack sawed trim. this was a really difficult decision to make on my part. But I like it better finished off and polished than simply cut off.
Additionally... each car was a little different. Notice how the burgundy car's front eyebrows over the fender seem so much more slanted than the other cars.... also notice how the trim seems to be different at the front of the eyebrow... vs the rear. Each car is different... each piece of trim unique. Each trim piece is a compound curve...
Don't overtighten the attaching bolts either! they will pull the alum body out. Fit the trim so it perfectly matches the curves of the car... even when just held up to the car and not attached. Then just finger tighten each bolt... and add a drop of locktight... and then "dumb dumb" body putty over the remaining threads of the bolt.

The pointed ugly ass spear trim, don't belong on front of a beeskow.. I went with what I think looks best more rounded, like the car...
And yes, all My door trim gaps over lap.. the trim was trimmed/filled/fitted/polished at my shop then sent out to be clear powder coated..
Some of the overrestoring. Under car. _________________ http://www.dbkvw.com/ |
