Hi Sanchodosrojo nice bus it turned out excellent and I was wondering about one of your pics it showed a bug being worked on next to yours? I'm thinking on taking my 62 there to have body and paint work done and was wondering if you had any info about the work they were doing on that bug? Thanks!

any word if they work on ghias? Sancho, thank you very much for your thread.. my ghia has been sitting in my garage for about 3 years now, deployments been getting in the way.. i took the frame off the chassis, and i worked on stripping the body down to bare metal to save me some money in the paint job.. but i have found bondo spots and rust.. im wondering if i can haul my ghia frame to them (no rolling chassis) ... im from your line of thought.. no hurry here, hell, mines been sitting for 3 years now! plus, i dont have $4k up front, but i can do a deposit and a few hundred here and there.. i do have family in tijuana, so they can do weekly check ups on the body.. big plus.. meanwhile i can work on the chassis and do my complete rebuild..
any wisdom ya'll can pass is greatly appreciated! _________________ Restoring my '73 Karmann Ghia |

Still down at the shop...they have begun painting it though finally! It's been there for about a year and a half. But in the end I should have a very straight vehicle painted with quality PPG Global oil-based paint (see pm Scot). |

Hi guys, update! Los Ponchos has painted my bus!
They've used PPG Global 2 stage solvent-based paint and wet-sanded to remove all orange peel. The pics below are after wet-sanding but before polishing which they are doing this week. The haziness on the panels is leftover wet-sanding slurry that hasn't been wiped off yet. I'm picking the bus up this coming Saturday, so I'll be able to get better pics then.
The quality of paintwork looks excellent to my and my brother's eye. Los Ponchos did extra work pro bono beyond what I had specified, including some welding, and a complete underside paint. I can't wait to pick the bus up this Saturday and start the assembly process.

wertygrog,
Wow nice looking bus it came out great! What paint codes did they use on your bus? My bug is in the process of getting body and paint work done and i want to use the same colors they did on your bus. Thanks! |

Hey Vdub! I'm very happy with the paint color as well. I'm not a paint expert but in person the red looks very 'correct' for SWR! They used the paint codes for SWR and beige grey in PPG Global 2 stage paint. If you look at the 4th page of my restoration thread at the link below, you'll see that I took pics of the lids of the paint cans. I think this might show what you're looking for. Like I said I'll post more/better pics of the paint when I get the bus home.

I'd be interested in hearing any final in-person impressions and photos as well. Year and a half wait is ROUGH, but if time is not an issue and the quality is there - could be a great deal for someone. |

Is there a way to get good quality work done there at a reasonable price, within a reasonable timeframe?
FWIW I've experienced significant time delays here with US based work, so it seems that way everywhere... Hopefully not at ~$100/hour in Mexico though! |

The real test of this, fellas, is going to be in a few years.
If they blasted the metal clean to get this (very beautiful) paint done,
It will look good for a long time.
If they went over old bondywork and paint,
It will be cheap enough to get it re-done in a couple of years.
From those last couple of pictures of this latest bus,
Best be keeping it inside at night.
Man, they sure did get those long sides straight!
My inclination would be to blast and seal a shell and deliver it to them like that.
That way they couldn't go over any old paint, even if they wanted to... _________________ Bus Motor Build

Hey guys!
Great thread and SITE you have here! You really have got my attention.
I have an e30 bmw that I want to take to them (yes, I know it's a far drive from Canada, but I don't need the car as a daily driver, and I'd like to possibly have some interior work done as well). I also have always wanted to drive the PCH, and have a few days to get to Mexico. I have also been considering some shops in SoCal, but I don't imagine the deal would be as good.
The car has a little rust in the common places, but overall it's in nice shape (for a Canadian e30).
Can you guys recommend any steps I should take before contacting the shop for a quote? I have some details pics of the rusty areas on my car that I'd like repaired with metal (not bondo) so I'm not sure if they use that method. I'd also be very interested in a color change (since the cars going to be mostly apart anyway). Any ideas on costs? also, is there anywhere in particular that i should get some of my paint supplies?
Also, in regards to the safety aspect of the trip. Anything I should keep in mind
thanks in advance |

Wondering if the original poster who started this thread or anyone else that used Los Panchos can provide an update on how the quality of the paint and the job they completed has held up thus far? Anyone have any insight? |

Hi Juanny, I got my bus bodyworked/painted at Los Ponchos almost two years ago (see pics above in previous post).
So far, no degradation or issues at all with the paint or bodywork. I keep the bus garaged but have driven it in the rain. No cracks, bubbles/blistering, or rust issues yet. Luckily they gave me enough extra paint that I was able to paint my safari window frames to match (which I installed just recently). See below for a recent pic (this reminds me I need to write the conclusion to my build thread!)
Cheers,
Brent

Brent-
Great news. Thank you for the update. Can you elaborate on how you went about ordering and confirming the paint colors used? I think i read that they take you down street to a local paint house? Any additional info you proivde regarding this is greatly appreciated.
cheers.
