I had it between 37 and 40 and it seemed a bit warm...any parts of the unit freeze faster than others? ? |
Cools from the bottom up. We keep a cold pack or two in the bottom to provide thermal mass & help maintain temp. Seems to help.
Fruits & veggies on top - the warmest zone.
Meats go on the "bottom" on top of the cooler packs. I use square, locking plastic containers to optimize the space. We tend to use the shallower right side basket for kids' snacks and a beverage or three.
My 43qt has a danfoss compressor. Pretty sure it's legit. The controller (and everything else) is definitely made in china.
Just got back from a week in Acadia (saw 7 westfalias: 3 water-cooled & one air-cooled vanagon, 2 EVs, and an orange '77). Our edgestar, set at 37, swung between 34 and 41 as we camped, drove around, and modified contents. Biggest trick was having the kids lock the fridge latch when done.
Very happy with performance on this trip. All 12v, no hookups. _________________ '86 x-1wd, now w/ 2wd! Wolfsburg Weekender

Thanks for the suggestions ~ will try a few new things now.
Not sure if mine is danfoss ~ did they use others at times? Does it have the name on the unit?
Have you ever tried freezing with it? I like the size and that fact that its very quiet. Also seems well-insulated ~ hardly switches on overnight. _________________ 1990 Syncro 16" DoppleKabine 2.1 DJ 112i

Got back from my eight night trip a couple of days ago and want to report back. My fridge only had one
episode where it shut off while on 12v all week and then only for 20 minutes. Not sure why it shut
down but I cured it by plugging into the inverter with the 110 plug. Ran it that way for 20 minutes and
switched back to 12v, didn't happen again! Even when my aux battery bank got down past 12.2v at
night the fridge continued to do what its suppose to. One thing that I have noticed is when the fridge is
plugged in to only the 12v, it seems to cycle less often. Don't know what that means other than the
110 side of things hits a certain degree and the compressor fires up, not so with the 12v side of things.
Glad I didn't have any issues and the fridge is still performing its duty on 12v!! _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

In mine there's a cooling fan that kicks on whenever 110V is plugged in, it is a slightly different noise than the compressor. You sure that doesn't explain why it seems to cycle more on 110? _________________ _____________________

I looked inside the fins and could see the fan, it is running. I don't think its an issue with it coming on in 110.
More so just coming on quicker than the 12v. |
Sorry, haven't had a chance to plug in to 110V yet. I've never seen the fan but had just noticed that I hear it come on immediately when I plug in to 110 while the 12V plug is still connected. I'm not sure but had assumed it was a fan solely for the DC Power Supply, like a computer's 5/12V power supply fan. _________________ _____________________

More weirdness with the fridge. Ran great on my week away and I get home and plug into shore power
and it stops working while I had it was operating on 12v during the night at some point?
The only other variable I could figure was the battery maintainer that charges my aux batteries.
Unplugged it two days ago and the fridge has been solely on 12v since and has done perfectly, hasn't
shut down once!
These small smart chargers seem to do a good job but while it is rapid charging could it also affect
the voltage sensor in the fridge? I'll keep it on 12v until something else happens to make it shut down
to rule out the charger itself! _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

Most battery maintainers are not meant to be used while the battery is under load. They typically are not dual purpose units like the IOTA's. Make sure your maintainer states that it can provide a DC load as well as charge the battery. This could be your problem.
This is what I use and it works great.

Good call! Talked with a tech at Schumaker and they said only 1 amp was ok. @ 5+ amp draw from the fridge it wouldn't charge and would shut the fridge down. |
Good call but not in my case! Checked the fridge this morning and the fridge was turned off even though
it was still plugged into 12v. So the maintainer was not the culprit but I suspect the fridge's transformer is.
I called Compact Appliance again and finally talked with a tech that actually knew something about
these fridges and he pointed me to their service videos. I have linked them below. I seems that my
fridges' transformer is malfunctioning and a new one has been ordered. From what the video shows
and the clear direction from the service tech it should be and easy repair.
One thing to note if you need a new transformer, you'll need to know which model number your fridge
has installed. Here is the pic of the two transformers.
Here's the service video and this goes for all three sizes of edgestar fp fridges.

So the main way to diagnose this is that the fridge shuts off on 12v and not on 110, right? Or maybe both?
When it shuts off, does the temp light go off, or did you notice because it wasn't staying cold? Trying to keep tabs on my new one so that I know its working correctly...! _________________ 1990 Syncro 16" DoppleKabine 2.1 DJ 112i

Recieved the new transformer and followed the videos instructions for installation. It really couldn't have
been easier! Very nice attention to detail with the video! After the install I plugged into 110 and the fridge
fired right up. I unplugged the 110 and tried out the 12v, same effect!! Checked the fridge this morning
and it is still on and working, Hurray!!
Over the last few days I had been leaving the fridge soley on 12v and by the time morning came the fridge
would be shut down. I hope this new transformer lasts longer than two+ years the old one did. Any additional
weirdness I'll report back in! _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

Has anyone found suitable replacement hinges for their FP430? Compact Appliance and Edgestar show them as NLA.
I have searched he internet with no success. Tomorrow I'm off to Home Depot with the busted one. _________________ '90 White Westy ("Knarr")

I called them this morning (after spending the weekend looking for suitable replacements) and they DO have them.
I informed the rep that the Compact Appliance website shows them as NLA and they will correct that to say you must CALL to order them.
Price + shipping = somewhere around $40.00 _________________ '90 White Westy ("Knarr")
