I just finnished rebuilding my motor and its running nice. While my motor was out I also replaced a bearing in the transmission on the differential. Now with everything back together and the motor running I went to drive it but it goes in reverse in all the forward gears and goes forward when I'm in reverse. Is it possible to assemble the trans. backwards and get the results described or is it an error that can be fixed without taking the motor and trans out of the car like linkage or shift plate? Thank for any info that is helpful in advance

You're joking right?
Yes you can install the ring gear on the WRONG side of the pinion gear and get exactly the results you report. Time to take it out and do it over if you're not pulling our legs.

You COULD just leave it that way and use it for a stunt car....running down the highway at 80mph in reverse....quite a thrill. How about a world record for longest distance jumped by a car in reverse? Dancing

I find the truth to be more funny than anything I could make up but for some reason I'm not laughing. I guess because I know what I'm going to be doing this weekend and it does not involve driving the bug.

Pain in the butt no matter how you slice it. You should really consider that world record first......

Just spin the engine and tranny around into a midmount configuration, bit of work on the linkages and stuff and away you go! Laughing

Sorry I shouldn't laugh but it is kinda funny

Related question??? Will the backlash setup be the same on one side of the pinion opposed to the other? Just can't seem to wrap my mind around it!

YES....use the OEM backlash recommended. You are putting it back to stock location. I don't know why you would use a different lash either way.

I think larry was asking if he slapped it together, will the lash end up correct on both sides. The answer is NO.

You can pull the axles and side covers without removing the tranny...flip the pinion to the correct side and bolt it back together.

You will have to pull a couple studs to get the covers off.

I am embarrassed to admit that I have been where you are....though mine was after a ring and pinion change.

About an hour later, I had things switched back around properly.

Should I have rechecked the lash? Yep.

Did I?

Nope...

She's nice and quiet.

Thanks Volksfiend I was just getting started and thought i would see if anyone knew if it could be done while in place. It looks close but stud removal will give it plenty of room. Easy mistake 50/50 chance and it all went back together so nice. Anyway I can laugh about later when I'm driving it around.
