|
|
Has anybody ever installed a wind screen (aka wind stop) device in a Super Beetle convertible? I'm talking about those things that fit behind the front seats in modern convertibles which supposedly cut down on a lot of wind noise and keep things warmer for going top down in cooler weather. I saw a good deal on a used one out of a New Beetle convertible and was tempted to see if I could make it work in my Super Beetle.
Does anybody have any experience/success in doing such a thing?
Thanks. |

Looks like there's a place on the web that sells them for various types of convertibles. Unfortunately not for air cooled Beetles but maybe one of them can be modified.

I agree with you, the wind was wicked for my kids when they rode in my Beetle vert. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

I've got one that I fit to my '72.
It was bought second-hand from a VW show about 3 years ago and after doing a little research it appears that it was made by a German company (alas I don't know the name though) and is a custom-fit for the Karmann Beetle....
It works OK but I've never actually got around to taking any pictures of it fitted to the car, though I do have an image of it fitted to the convertible of the guy I bought it off.....
Will try and dig out the picture and post it up......

On my '79 super I have KAMEI wind shots witch are very easy to remove and you still can drive with passengers on the back seats

Reminds me of a Repair Order I was handed once.
"Customer States: Wind noise with sunroof open."
Dont want to seem to blunt, but you have no roof, some wind noise and air movement may be experienced. I suppose you have tried to drive with the windows up, and a top boot installed? A boot makes a difference in itself. _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

Speaking from personal experience in my 79 vert, no, that doesn't help the back seat passengers. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

Yeah I get it, been there too, but....... it has no top. What exactly are we expecting from such an unaerodynamic vehicle with no roof? I dont know maybe I'm just being to harsh, in thinking about the obvious, plus the original post didnt specify rear seat passenges.
I read another post where somone was whining about wind buffering on a sliding ragtop too with it open........Hello it has a hole in the roof. It maybe just maybe may make some noise, Oh and you may feel some air too.
It's a case where we want new car comfort in a car that has its root design from the 1930's. _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

True. If you want a vert you better be a "wind in your hair" type or you have no business driving one. When I had mine, if the sun was out on a February day I'd be out there with the top down, hat, gloves, scarf, heavy coat, the whole nine yards, just so I could be out with the top down! _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

I got the answer!
Get a Helmet!
On a more serious note... My seats do a great job of blocking the wind on my neck. Notice the stock head rest is much wider than the other pictures on this post.

Bit of an update; I've taken some pics of my car today with the wind blocker fitted.
Having had a look on the UK VW Cabrio Owners Club website I then found an article about the same wind blocker as mine (I didn't know of this review when I bought mine-it was bought second-hand at a VW show approx 3 years ago), but it looks as if Hoffman-Speedster no longer sell this accessory as I can't find it on their website now?.......

I found a link to the KAMEI page which sells their wind shots. I've sent them an e-mail inquiring as to whether they have any U.S. dealers. I'm planning to get a pair of these one way or another.

I haven't noticed a wind issue sitting in the front
Seems to me those deflect the wind for the back seat. But nobody can sit in the back seat with it on so it loses it's functionality |

There is only me and my GF, So functionality is no problem at all. period.
Just wonder - will it help fight/easy that wind falling on my GF hair?
I do not have any hair, so the wind is not issue for me, but for my GF is. _________________ 159 2001 678, FI convertible.

This is funny.
Aside from my bug, I own a 1993 Honda Del Sol. You take the top off and put it in the rear trunk. Suddenly, it's a convertible. With the windows rolled up, the design of the cabin makes it seem as if the top is still on the car. There is only a tiny breeze.
Which brings me to this: why would you put your top down if fast-passing air is a problem? I mean, a convertible is supposed to allow the air to pass all over and keep you cooler. At least, that's what it used to be.
Remember the old "Big-ass America Car" ads, showing the guy driving a vert--and his wife or girlfriend was usually wearing a scarf to keep her hair from blowing all over. Before most people had A/C in their cars, this Route 66 image was the zenith of luxury.
Hm? I guess nowadays it's like the pool I have in the backyard. No one goes in it--except me--unless the ambient temperature reaches 105 F. Then, I can coax them out of our air-conditioned house ... and away from their I-pads.

Different strokes for different folks. The reason I put the top down is get a breeze.
Guess I'm lucky, the wife likes to wear big hats and likes her hair blowing around.. She also gets to retrieve said hats when they blow off her head and down the road. It was part of the vows |
