Looking for hose to run from the electric fan in the engine compartment to the tubes running down to the heater boxes. Found this stuff on line. Open for opinions on this hose and any other possible solutions.

| Looks decent. Zims is a very good place . I used to buy certain parts there when I lived in Dallas. They are just on the South side of pricey so if its something you needed it was not too painful. They had lots of Hella parts. Ray |

That is true for a bus, but checking the hoses sizes for my '72 411 4dr shows that they are both 55 mm, at least on the fan end. |

I believe the wagon with its odd blower had the two different diamter hoses. The two and four doors with center mounted blower had equal size hoses if memory serves. I can measure both when i get home this weekend. Ray |

I went out and remeasured my blower, yes Scott is right there are two different sizes on the 4 dr. The book shows it is the wagon style blower that uses the same diameter hoses for both sides. Don't know what the VW engineers where thinking when they came up with the various systems they used for the heat, they just seemed to like to come up with a whole pile of different parts for slightly varying applications.
VW must have had an engineering exchange program with the truck division of International Harvester. Gotta keep that interchangeability down to an absolute minimum for some reason. |

Wow....talk about memory failure . I knew there was one that was odd.....I could of sworn it was the wagon blower. That one with its odd connections ...and the one really long hose to get back to the right side.
Learn something new every day. Ray |

not that the parts books has everything 100% correct, but typically they are pretty accurate. the book only shows one blower, it's the centre-mounted one similar to the bus unit - early type 4 powered bus has a blower that is identical to the 411 unit in fact. later bus has a plastic housing to the blower but the hoses are still the same size.
what is this other type of blower you're speaking of - for a wagon? _________________ scott lyons

| Wagons had a single outlet blower mounted off to the left side that connected to a "Y" setup to feed the two heater boxes. The outlet of the blower itself was rectangular in cross section. |

X2...yes. If memory serves (which sometimes it does not )....the actual motor on both models is the same, but the squirrel cage is different on the wagon.I think smaller in diameter but longer, and as Wildthings noted, the single side opening housing. I think at one time I may have swapped a wagon motor into a 4 door...it was a bit of work. Ray |

I went down the motor swapping road a few years back, and remember that there were multiple motors used over the years. I seem to remember that there was a minimum of interchangeability between them. Different mounting of the motor to the fan housing, different rotation, and maybe different amperage as well. |

Yes....pretty much all true. The wagon version is more can shaped and maybe slightly larger in diameter (motor can). It also has a different mounting plate and required different holes in that plate to mount to a 2 door style housings....and the fan had to be swapped...not easy but I cannot remember exactly what was required.....and I think I had to swap polarity.
It was easily 15 years ago. After that I quickly got as many spares of the right kind as possible.
I do remember that at first blush I thought it would be a simple swap. It ended up as two days of miserabl crap to get a functioing swapped over motor. It was cold so I needed it.
It ran for a long time though...and I may still have that motor somewhere. Ray |
