Soon I'm going to have my Bug shipped here from California. From what I understand I'll need to take it to an inspection station to get my stickers. How in depth do they really go? What should I look out for? Sure my bugs slammed but done correctly and have some camber going on out back. I have relocated my turn signals in my headlight buckets and they also work. It says i can get away with one mirror, I only have the rear view. I'm not sure they will like the stinger though. Any advise would be helpful as I am clueless, thanks. _________________ ✠Miklo✠

I actually had the guy come outside to look at my bus before giving me the sticker. He only did so because he wanted to see the brake lights come on.
In other words, it's a means of generating revenue for the state, and that's about it. It CAN be a way for the inspection stations (many of which are quicky oil change places, small garages, and the like) to generate revenue for themselves by selling you light bulbs, etc.
It's a joke in terms of determining safety and road worthiness.
I decided instead to register my VWs as antiques and avoid the inspection process altogether. Plus, the plate is good for 5 years at about $13 a year. If it's your daily driver, you may not want to do it as an antique since there're supposedly restrictions on when you can drive the car. I've never been questioned. Never.
Hope that helps. |

Thats what I was thinking... not much thought put into looking at each car.
I drive my Jetta mostly, what kind of driving restrictions does an antique plate carry? _________________ ✠Miklo✠

Just looked it up -
Antique license plates are issued for cars, trucks or motorcycles that are at least 25 years old and are a collector’s item. The vehicle must be used exclusively for exhibitions, club activities, parades or other functions of public interest. Vehicles displaying Antique plates may not be used for regular transportation or carry advertising. The vehicle may be driven to and from a location for routine maintenance.
How can they determine what I'm driving it for?... "Officer I'm in a parade and I got lost..." _________________ ✠Miklo✠

The way I look at it, every time I drive it it's a test drive, or I'm going to the parts store, or to a fellow dubbers house to work on it, etc. etc. |

Egg-zachry. I've been doing it that way for 2-3 years and the cops don't even look at me. |

The only time I failed an inspection in Texas was when the power steering belt was missing from my Volvo 240. All equipment has to be in working condition. I put a belt on it, came back and it passed. Never mind that the power steering pump leaked like crazy so I didn't have any fluid in it. I just had to have the belt on there. _________________

Every time I've had an inspection done it's been fair and reasonable. On one occasion I needed wiper blades (and I really did), but it was passed anyway. As long as the lights, signals, and brakes work you will usually have no problem. I don't know about the stinger though. That will probably depend on the inspector. _________________ In 1966 Volkswagen pinched my loaf.

The only time I've ever heard of someone getting a ticket was when the cops were checking the parking lot at a high school on a regular basis, and they noticed the car parked there every day.
The funny thing was that it was a teacher's car. |

It varies a lot from location to location but is mostly basic stuff.
My station is very thorough but the stuff that is required is reasonable.
All lights must work. I always forget to check the tag light. If it has two only one must work. Horn must work. Emergency brake must work and hold car.
On newer cars I have had them test my gas cap for leaks. On my bug they tried to test it but didn't have an adapter that fit. They looked at the car and said to old, test not required. My station drives them a short distance to test the brakes and make sure it doesn't pull. Bald tires probably wouldn't pass. Wipers must clear windshield.
When I had 6 volt car I tried to have them inspected on cloudy days because in bright sunlight The brake lights weren't very visible as hard as I tired to make sure they did.
On my new cars thaey look under the hood( I presume they are looking to make sure all the emission stuff is there) but I don't ever recall them opening the decklid on one of my bugs
Some big urban areas that have failed EPA requirements( Houston I presume) have some kind of emission check. They get a different color sticker.
All that being said I too run YOM antique plates on both my bugs becasue it is cheap.
Pass or fail it is $14.50 |

Cool, thanks guys. I'm going to try and get an antique plate.
Looks like I'm going to put my wipers back on, didn't need them much in SoCal. ... and get those license plate brackets for the front. _________________ ✠Miklo✠

Back when Oklahoma still had yearly Inspections there were lots of Hot Rod shops where you could just walk in and buy a sticker for $20. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

YOM's aren't an option anymore in Texas unless you have already had them approved. Antique, Classic and Vanity plates are all that are offered now besides the standard one. _________________ 69' Karmann Ghia Convertible AWD Project (FB Build) (STF Build) |
