I bought my bug–with the help of my pops–in the summer of 2007 (right after graduation). My parents thought I was foolish in buying an almost 50 year old car that hadn't been restored (and I was). But I worked all summer to pay it off, and I never looked back. I've had it almost 7 years now and it's broken down on me too many times (I take the blame for most of those–being a novice), but I've had the awesomest adventures with it. From LA, to SF, to SD, to Vegas. I don't intend on buying another car until (which I'm hoping is a Type 2 single or double cab) it's completely restored. It's the only car I have.
–1963 Type 1
–1776cc
–Not stock, and not a freeway flyer, but not sure what it is.
–165s
–20-something mpg
–About 29 miles to school, and 26 to work, 18 to church. 300+ miles weekly.
–At the moment, it need suspension work so it's kind of sketch, but besides that, I've had plenty of great times with her.
–To have her slammed, air bagged, disc brakes all around, the (suspension) works. Maybe one day get her painted.

Yes. Still drive my'65 everyday. Preparing it for a 3500 mile trip this summer to Wyoming. Getting my trip-speedometer back from North Hollywood Speedometer today after a clean, adjust and lubricate. It is NOS in the box since 1967 and needed fresh oil. Also installing just for the trip, a 14 gallon VW gas tank...too tall for daily use as it will really reduce front trunk space.

DYX, Welcome and you have a great car! Are you and car still in Germany? City? How about some more pics of your car, engine, interior etc. Maybe a little history if you know it?

I only have for transportation my two 1969 Beetles. So, they are driven daily in all weather conditions. No heater or AC in them. One has a 2007cc with 120HP and gets only 25 mpg on the highway at 65 mph and the other has a smaller 1776cc and gets 27mpg. I don't see many being driven in the Houston, Texas area, other than mine, on a daily basis. Don't know why, unless everyone needs AC, unlike old me.

There are just a lot fewer ACVWs left now. Figure that only a percentage of those get driven regularly and there you are.

Not a 58-67' Beetle... but my daily driver and only mode of transportation non-the-less(other than an old 51' cruiser bicycle). A 68' right hand drive Devon camper and yes, purists beware, I drive it through Chicago winters. Bone stock though I replaced the stock 1600dp with a 1500sp. The engine now wears a 40hp big cap cast iron vacuum advance only distributor and a 34-3 along with a Porsche 356 generator pulley for better cooling.

Ich lebte ich Darmstadt für 4 Jahre und liebte Deutschland, während ich in der Armee war. Ich kaufte einen neuen VW Käfer 1966 dort.

Ich fahre jeden Tag meine Käfer.

i've been driving her for 7 years now, (24 miles round trip to work) daily! rain, sleet, snow, or shine. put around 54k miles on her after the resto. not to many issues or "bugs" to work out for a 51 year old car. winter sucks (road salt), it gets pretty cold here in nc (9 degrees), so i built my own heater box system which works well enough to keep the window from freezing over. although, i do have a "backup" car just in case (67 morris mini rhd), but really don't use it much. plan on driving the vdub daily for many more years to come. i believe it takes a lot more to drive a 50+ year old car and keep it on the road than a new car, but how many people can saw the still use there old vw everyday Very Happy

Although I have older bugs at home, this is my daily driver. I was lucky that I found a super that didn't have a shimmy. As a matter of fact, I think it is all basically original, except for the transmission. The P.O. told me it had been replaced because of gearing problems.

I only do about 10 miles a day, with the MPG at about 19. I'm working to get better. It has had times where it had to be parked. Master cylinder went out - metal fuel line had a hole wear into it. Little things that needed some TLC and time to fix, but nothing major (yet).

When I got it, I did a tune up, oil change, and had to put in a carb kit. It has some fairly good heat for our Montana winters, but when it hits -20, I fall back to my other car. It's a '90 Isuzu Trooper.

I think that ACVW's can make daily drivers, but they DO need work. It's not just a "buy it, drive it, and forget it". It's a commitment. I would never have one as my only driver though. Best to have a backup of something. Of course, it would be sweet if your backup was another bug (or bus). I guess I best be working on those other ones!

I drove my '64 exclusively from '07 until April of this year when I bought a second car. Still drive it regularly. I put 77,000 miles on it since I started driving it in '07. From April of '13 to April of '14 I put 16-17k miles on it. Been without heat for the last 3 winters after swapping to a header without heater boxes. Laughing

Only had to be towed home once in all that time for a loose baffle in the muffler, still driveable but was rattling very badly so I towed it home.
