I always thought it was the old horsehair inside the seats. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

Thats what Im thinking,Mine needs changing out especially the back seat
If you sit in the back seat it will leave a big mesh on the floorboard.
But I dont want to get rid of the smell so it will have to stay for now |

I like the smell. Goes well with the exhaust and gas fumes!
Seriously, though, I've smelled similar in older vintage cars at shows. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

to keep the interior original smell that t comes from the horsehair padding, plastic, & glues gabardine fabrics or rubber & wool carpets that enhances when cold or hot, when restoring reuse the original horsehair material use a thin layer of foam or composite padding to cover the old stuff specially the botton of seats to stop shedding, it will smell very good !. always keep the car well vacunm to get rid of falling material or powders from seats, (if unrestored or original ) remember original vynil and materials are different than the new high tech stuff so commposition of old plastic will give you the original smell. that only connosiurs will recognize; although I also apreciate new fresh interior smell nothing beats that factory original scent
I just sold 56 year old seat the only concern on the buyer was does it have the original material inside? wish I had a photo of his happy face when he look and saw the earlier different hair in good condition, he is a fellow samba well known vw collector. as a matter of fact vw's were introducing the new manmade materials at an affordable car price. |

A buddy of mine used to make his own incense. He would make the sticks using ground up leaves or spices to make the smell.
I challenged him to make a vw incense.
A few weeks later he gave me a few sticks, THEY REALLY SMELLED LIKE A VW!!!
He said it was ground up horsehair padding and a dribble of used motor-oil. I couldn't have laughed any harder. _________________ It will make it. Trust me.

The smell is also quite unchangeable. Even with new foam seat pads and new covers the car still smells just like any other ACVW. I have a couple friends who smoke and I let them smoke in it (why not, it was a smoker's car before I got it) and even after all that...it smells just the same as it always has. Gotta love the VW smell _________________ My '72 Super |
