| sure build a roll cage and make your bug hard as hell to get into and out of ,not to mention heavier. what will really make you car safe is if you put reflector stips all arounf it and a flashing yellow light |

Roll cages are for bugs that run 11:99 or less in the quarter mile. Outside of that is overkill, or maybe showing off.
In my opinion anyway. Always have to throw that in or youll get it on this site. LOL. |

| if you run offroad or road race i'd put one in. for a regualr street car, it's way overkill. The cage wouldn't make it any safer in a crash, but it would in a rollover. |

I'm sure the rollcage would survive with minor scratches. |

"Roll" cage, sounds like it provides protection in a rollover. So if you plan to roll your car, you'll be safer w/ the cage.
I doubt that it would provide any additional protection in the typical accident. |

Yeah you could throw in a roll cage and make your car *safer for the caged in occupants*.
In order to get a cage to protect you complelty you will have to make a sub frame and bring the cage all the way into the front hood compartment, tie that into the bumper mount points, tie that into the front suspension, then do the same in the rear.
If you want safe go and buy a 78 lincoln or something. |

You could put a roll cage in it, no problem. Just make sure that you wear a helmet everytime you drive to the grocery store because once you get in an accident, you're going to bump your head again on that 2in. of steel, and it's going to hurt.
LOL!

I think this guy must be writing a school paper on how to make it safe to crash a bug. I have never seen so many questions about safety. Go buy a volvo! Geez!

| Dude, I'm so with you chris. Check out all the posts he has on safety in a bug. The bug is a safe car if you drive it right!! That's all you need to know! Stop doing stupid modifications that take away from the originality of the bug! |

| Bugs might be a lot of things, but I don't think "safe" is one of them. Maybe safe for when they were designed in the 1930s. |

It wouldn't hurt putting in a full sub frame extending the front hood compartment and bumpers but it's not neccessary to add safety. We built a cage for my friends baja and it extends from the very front of the cabin over the pedals to the very back of the cabin to the firewall. Very strong and will protect the occupants in an accident.
Granted you should also be tying in some racing buckets into the cage along with 5 point harnesses (which is what I've done in my Samurai). Also I've set the seats lower than stock so that I don't come near hitting the cage.
2 inches is overkill in a bug also. 1.5" .120 HREW is more than strong enough. Most of the class 11 cages on the market are 1.5" .90 HREW btw. |
