Hello and Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays ect!

Lesley and I are heading to Texas in this old/new, worn/loved bus we call Lazarus. Ought to be interesting, traveling the backroads in a very old vehicle!

I have gotten the interior back in. Baltic Birch you know. He's looking good!! If I had to do it again, I wouldn't. Put a new exhaust gasket in on Sunday, didn't know it was leaking till then. Today a new ignition/key/lock. I guess after 28 years and 209,000 miles stuff is going to break. It has be a bit freaky, but Lesley thinks I can fix it if it breaks. I am blessed in so many ways, Merry Christmas to you all!

Peace
David

I've made that trip a bunch of times. I don't know what you consider backroads. But I like going south thru south Arkansas into louisana thru Monroe. And then head thru Texas. And you can avoid 35 south.

Today's plan from Boonville MO is Joplin, Fort Smith AR, Broken Bow OK and on towards Tyler TX. It changes hourly Rolling Eyes

Our cruising speed 56 mph, avoiding I-35 is a priority.

Someday soon will change our gearing to occasionally cruise the big slick.
The old vanagon can achieve 75 mph but that is really wound tight.

Onward thru the fog

yup, good luck. i'm sure everybody has told you the spares and tools to bring. just keep and eye and an ear on everyhting while your traveling.

we just drove our 82 westy from san diego to west texas. never had a problem. drove the interstate the whole way, i don't really have a problem driving 55 - 60 and letting everybody pass us.

drive safe!

I travel to SAT often, and avoid I35. I saw one post that said you need to "keep one eye on the temp gauge and one eye on the road". I think this is good advice.

Good travels

I used to worry -- can't say that it helped much.

One day (Dec 1996) we sold the house, put everything in storage except what we had in the Westy, and left on what turned out to be a 1 year, 25,000 mile trip.

Somewhere along the way I was cured of the worry factor and just went with what happened and did what had to be done.

Glad you made it.

Go to Mi Tierras, downtown next to the Mercado. You won't regret it. Very Happy

That is brilliant. Isn't that one of the reasons we own Vanagons and pull out of the driveway. To learn the art of that surrender. I need to get out on the road again. I've spent a little too much time on this site thinking about big bumpers and engine conversions.
