I would be surprised if there were controls on the '62 rear heater outlets. My kickboards are original and there's no trace of any kind of control on the openings, and the owner's manual doesn't mention them either. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

My thoughts exactly. Most would function without. I didnt remember any controls either.
From memory the plastic parts would include, the split off of the right heater channel bolted into the channel extension, the "Y" above the right outlet, and maybe but not too sure about this 2 adapter connection portions that connect the round corrugated tube to the back of the oval rings.
Looks like Harris may have the routing for photo reference.
Ill send this to glutamodo, he may have a photo also. _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

I'm confused now for sure after looking at Andys '06 link and seeing Downtown Brown's photo. What I have stuck in my kick panel opening is only a part of the piece I probably should have.

This will help stop the post jumping. Thanks Andy
The oval vent outlet tubes are welded to the floorpan.

Thanks Navy8r,
Better late than never works for me!!!
After owning my '62 for 17 years, I now see that there is no hose attachment to the vent. Just squeeze the hose down to fit the vent.
Another late night engineering job over warm German beer by the VW boys. I see why they later changed it.
Thanks again for posting the photos. |

How about them apples. All the time I thought mine was missing something. It Just didnt seem correct to have the corrugated tube stuffed in the rings. This post has been educational. . I knew 1962 was a transistion year to make way for the newer fresh air heat in 63 and now its obvious only a fair attempt was made. Another reason to love the 1962 Beetle.
I'm glad I kept my 62 kick panels, after all these years. My 62 ragtop is currently under re-reconditioning, and the rear floor heat is in its future this time around. Either fabricate or want ads. I guess I'll go the easy route first. _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

Navy8r,
Thanks, that's awesome!
Can you send pictures of the front of the kickplates so we all know what the end result is supposed to look like and what pieces we should all be hunting for?
Thanks-a-million |

That picture looks pretty good to me from what I can see. Except I think the oval shaped metal outlets are supposed to be black, not grey. I've never painted mine over all the years so they have original paint - black, on them. A very quick snap I just grabbed - with it below freezing absolutely no attempt to clean anything up - carpet was replaced 15 years ago, the vents are orig. I have no idea what ever became of the felt surrounds between kick plates and the vents. Probably gone before I got the car in 89. Kick panels, they are not originals to this car. But the metal vents are!

glutamondo, Yes, I was referring to Harris' photo with the Rust interior. His show white or gray (plastic?) vent pieces. Mine (see URL link) look just like your photos, so now I am confused too. It seems either we are both missing the plastic pieces or the ones in Harris' photo are custom or aftermarket and the little black hose connector is all there ever was from the factory? _________________ Guilt is a useless emotion |

I dont think (could be wrong) those are any type of plastic trim/bezels, but the clean rolled side of the metal oval rings, that simply exit through the panels.
You can see by this picture (below) the rings form a flange on the back side that when the panels are set into place they simply butt up against the ring and gasket.

I would be willing to bet that the plastic face pieces are original to the car. My kickplates look like Glutamodo's but if I remeber right, i'll go double check, but my pan also has little "stopper" tabs that keeps the bottom of the kickplate from being pushed back to far. In turn this keeps the kickplate from sealing up real well with the metal bracket. It looks to me like Glutamodo has pushed the kickplates well beyond the keeper tabs so that they actually come through the kickplates.
I'll have to get some pictures up. |

Actually, there is a little barbed tab inside the vent that you have to crimp up into the top of the hose to hold it in place. Nearly impossible to see, but it's there.
Here is another version of the rear heater hose. This one is obviously a later incarnation because it's metal with cardboard on the ends.
113 255 515A for those that care. It would be nice if the hose was just an inch longer. BTW that's the same part number (minus the A) for the "Y" piece on the earlier setups. The aluminum piece that screws into the heater channel is 113 255 511. Hope this helps in the parts search.
