how much power do you think its needed to do a burnout (as simple as is) in a bug with 17 inches tires. we saw a guy overhere doing that and me and some folks are arguing about that. some say it may be a 1776 engine, the other one says stroker(but im sure its no stroker), the other 1914.... what do you think???? |

Depends on whether or not they had a line lock on the front brakes. Got a video? |

With water under the tires, a 36 HP engine could fry them hides! _________________

I did a burn out with a battery powered fork lift once, because some one said it could not be done.

Who cares, go do a bigger one and own him.
A little trans fluid under the tires will do it.... |

ok , i know that the engine isnt stock and it is dual carbed(hpmx),i have seen the car at the shop but dont know the owner, we(me and pals) were cruising(large avenue for cruising) and find the guy stopped at the light we were at the opossite side, it wasnt raining , no wet floor . the guy was trying to show off, and as soon as light went green, the guy made a drag like start burning a lot of rubber and making some white smoke, for several meters , so no braking, so i know it isnt a burnout but the thing that calls my attention is that hes running 17 " tires .
so now what do you guys think??? |

My bone stock 1600 would do a pretty nasty smoke show if I dumped the clutch from a dead stop, but my tires at the time weren't that great. That was only in one gear though, the 1915 turbo I have now will light rubber through 3 gears. _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747

The nephews floor sleeper with progressive, header/stinger, copper feramic whatever clutch disc and poor man's posi would do smokers and donuts like crazy in his 64' before it got wrecked. Doesn't take huge power to start it and even less once you get it going good.

The lower the tire profile the less resistance the tread has on the ground. No sidewall flex equals easier to spin. Just like a 17" tire that would most likely be a 45 series, sometimes less on such a vehicle.
If this person was smoking 15" tires with say, 65 series that would be more impressive. Assuming he didn't inflate those tires to the max for easy spinning.
I would hunt him down and find out what he packed in the back. |

A stroker crank and 100 or more ft/lbs of torque will let you fry any size wheel combo as far as you like. Burnouts are all about torque anyways, not HP. _________________

Low profile tires and moderate-to-high tire pressure will allow just about any engine combo to light them up. _________________

So let's just say it was a 1776 with about 85 to 100 hp and call it a day

volkyoo, I have no spacers on my stroker! He could have custom piston pin height allowing everything to remain as narrow as stock, or narrower. |

right on...
i used to run 45series 16inchers on my dad's 1300 bug
and could do nice burn outs (driving out of the university) hahahahaha
but always had 35psi on the rear tires.. just to be sure

ok, but the mechanics over here dont have those skills. and probably this i s why that guy dosnt have a stroker. in the entire island i have just seen 1 stroker(2332 dual 48 ida) in a buggy and his best time is 13.7..... |

No offense Volkyoo but what is the purpose of this thread? Do you want to build a motor to do a longer burnout than the other guy? Why don't you just walk up to the guy and ask him about his motor?
Just wondering. _________________
