Nice weather this afternoon. Painted the ( "Cow Catcher" ) front body support/headlight support. Painted the 1"x2" body lift with Summit Racing semi gloss black chassis paint. This paint is really good looking stuff and durable. Just need to give a week or more cure.

Not much work this weekend. Touched up some welding and prepped the Roll Bar/Cage and rear bumper/motor cage for the black epoxy primer.
Asked by my local VW Club (WAGENFOLKS) to bring out the rolling chassis.

Started working on the body this week. Cracked hood is the only damage to the 40 year old NOS body.
Dash section/Hood was poorly attached. Removed old glass and reattached with new fiberglass.
Sanding down original 40 year old Gelcoat and filling in imperfections.
Hopefully some primer and some paint sprayed by the weekend.

Looking good. I was watching that body in the classified section for months. When I was ready to purchase a buggy, it was gone. Do you plan to have it done in time to go to the Outer Banks this fall with Joe? |

Yes Chad my plans are to be at the MOTB with this Buggy. This body was a NOS undrilled/ uncut body but has been a PITA to get prepped for paint. Hundreds of little shrinkage cracks in the Gelcoat all over this body from setting in the elements for 40 years. It would have been easier to just buy a new body but they seem a little plain looking...IMO.
My goal is to be painted and running by July 15 2012 give or take a week.
I used some high build primer today on the body and layed down over a gallon of primer and could still see hundreds of cracks. Let it dry and spent another 8 hours filling and sanding out cracks and imperfections. This is the days end results after another application of high build primer.
It looks pretty dang good now... |

X2 Looking good indeed, but I was impressed with the black wet sand pictures.
Wish mine was at this stage, I'm no fan of sanding and don't trust my ability to detect what will show up in the final paint and what won't. Too many hours invested to have to do it more than once.
Keep up the good work, looks like you are well on track to meet your deadline _________________ Gary

The body is finally ready for paint. I would have liked to have painted today but we had thunderstorms and high winds.
Went ahead and layed out the tail lights and drilled out and test fitted the 1958 Chevrolet tail lights with LED's.
Built a home made paint booth....

Last weekend I applied the base paint and had a few set backs. I had broke through the primer in several areas while wet sanding and the origional black was showing through the paint.
The temperature was also very cool for June at 70 degrees and had several runs in the base paint. I decided to walk away for a week and regroup.
Sanded down the runs in the base paint with 400 grit wet/dry paper and resprayed approxamately 4 coats of high build primer. After a few hours I went ahead and wet sanded primer with a well used 400 grit sand paper and prepared to try to lay down some base paint and not run the paint this time.
Temperature today was a little on the warm side at 90 degrees but my garage thermometer was at 85 degrees so I decided to lay down some paint.
First base paint down and ran. Sanded runs out.
Well here it is....I am very happy with the results today.
4 liberal coats of base and 8 coats of clear!
BOOOOWAAAAAAA!!!!!!!! |

Is it the camera, or is it the paint? I do not see orange peal. It looks dipped and wet!
So, should I come pick up the body dolly, or should I just bring my body over there? _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

There is no orange peel...You are looking at dry paint. It came out AWWWWWSSSSSOME!!!!! I think it is as good or better than the Corvette paint. You could get by without buffing. |

I plan on using a spray on bed liner with no rubber added. It will go on semi gloss black with just a hammered paint look... but tough. The gel coat inside the tub is really cracked up so this will be easy fix. I wll also cover the outside of the tub with the same bedliner. If it does not look good I will make some custom inside panels later. |
