Hey Tony,
I am going to read thru your thread when I have more time. I just picked up a 78 CE, complete but no engine. I have one for it, ready to go but I will be waiting till after Winter to start on it. Have to work on some title issues first.
Something I am curious about the seat upholstery options on these. Mine has cloth inserts with vinyl sides. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

Wow! Good score! Dusty, lol.
Yes, the interior had vinyl sides and corduroy inserts. In many of my recent pictures, you can see I've swapped out my front seats. I'll go back to the originals when I have time to redo them and do them right.
Good luck with that Champagne, man. I'd love to see a thread started on it when you get more progress. _________________ -Tony

Does saving money count as working on your bus? It seems like that's all I've been doing lately.
Well in Oklahoma it's 12 degrees one weekend and 60 the next. So we waited it out and decided to take advantage when it was nice.
My buddies Adam, David, and Dewayne came over for a visit. My particular 'club' here in Tulsa is a great bunch of dudes. 3 out of the 4 of us had never pulled a type 4 engine before, and no one had pulled a type 4 out of a car that a type 4 actually belonged to. Enough chatter, time for business:
Next up: nosecone seals, and a ton of parts and tins to the parts washer.
After that: Hone cylinders, piston rings, seal kit.
My bus looks really unusual without a bumper, and sitting so high. _________________ -Tony

No worries, I'm determined to bring this thing back.
After seeing how much oil was getting past the rings, I think I know why it wasn't doing so well.
I'll snap pics before I clean up to take to the parts washer. Good god.
Good news is, from what I can tell, the seats have NOT been mercilessly pounded into the heads on any combustion chamber. But whether or not they are cracked anywhere remains to be seen.
No more news until the parts washing and transmission seals, I'm afraid. Although you never know I might surprise you with something.
Thanks for the motivation guys.
I recently lost my father to heart failure, and it's been hard to keep going. But my bus buddies here in town are great for pushing you when you need it. _________________ -Tony

Get a box of nitrile gloves to keep those hands clean and also help protect them a bit. 7 mil thickness gives good tactile performance ( ) and tear protection.
Works wonders with your partner too. _________________ .ssS! |

Good for you man. While that motor and such is out, now is a good time to get in there and check your often neglegted parts. Filler neck, fuel sender, clean up the engine bay, all that important detail stuff. _________________ MAKE FORUMS GREAT AGAIN

Yep! I'm thinking of painting the engine compartment a tan/beige to match the lightest of the original stripes. I'm a huge sucker for originality, but I can make that sacrifice.
I need new CV boots, new fuel evap hose throughout the engine compartment, my rear side markers are all fucky, I need a battery tray fixed, I'll lube my heater cables, adjust my parking brake, I'll definitely grab a new filler neck, too. When the necessities are taken care of, I want to install some lighting back there too. Maybe just 1 LED rope, neatly tucked away around the edges of the engine compartment ceiling.
Oh I forgot! I bought new shoes and pads for the brakes too!
Boy all this shit is going to be easy without a type 4 mystery engine weighing it down and taking up all the room.

Cool! I have no job these days, if you needed a hand or two....maybe when youve got all your engine parts together? _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

Well hell yeah man. Can you drive down? It's only a 29 hour drive LOL.
I'd like some assistance with the CV's, but my Oil Capital Air Cooled buddies have my back on the rebuild. I will post photos of the heads, P&C, and other stuff later on. _________________ -Tony

If i flew down and stayed for two or three days, you could be back on the road in a week from now....unlike your buddies, i have rebuilt a t4 motor, and am very familiar with them.
In the mean time, look up bug me videos. Volume 8.

The following images are rated FD for being f*cking disgusting. lol
Took a wire brush and a car windshield ice scraper to the Pistons and Cylinders.
The fins were so clogged with dirt and grease and oil that was getting past the rings. All the rings were loosey goosey. All the pistons had lots of carbon buildup and scorched edges. The cylinders are missing fins in a few places.
Heads, pistons, cylinders, and transmission all go away to the shop today for cleaning, seals, etc. I'll be sure to post pictures of the Heads before I turn them in. Funny thing about the heads, the rockers on the 1&2 head had a solid spacer, and the rockers on the 3&4 head had a spring spacer.
Can anyone tell me what that clip thing is called, at the bottom of this picture? ^^^^ I only found 5...and it seems like I should have 8.
I'm saving the tin for another day. Will probably just clean them up myself and repaint. _________________ -Tony

Those are called wrist pin retainers or wrist pin clips, and yes you need 8. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
