If you don't feel like cutting out the battery tray, you can temporarily fix it with some fiberglass cloth, POR15, and plate of steel. Cut the cloth to fit (put multiple layers down) and cover the hell out of it with the POR. once dried get a piece of steel to fit the shape of the tray. I did it on my bus and it's holding up great. _________________ '77 Westy 2.0L FI

Nice! Thanks for the advice, sonofamitch. I was planning on neutralizing the rust, slapping on some rustoleum, trimming a license plate, add some rivets and some seam sealer for a temporary fix. But I hadn't considered fiberglass!
I REALLY don't want to weld in a new tray on account of my lovely original paint.
Did I say lovely OG paint?
I mean it will be when I get around to waxing again
@Stu, everything's going slow right now. Saving up some more dough. I've been super f*cking depressed and its hard to stay motivated. _________________ -Tony

You can get that tray in without burning your paint. Just weld in the areas not adjacent to exterior paint.
Here is my experience:http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5...ttery+tray _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

Thanks for the tips, Gentlemen. I may just get extra long battery cables and keep the battery on the Driver's side for now. A buddy of mine runs his battery there in his split window and it works just fine. At least until I can afford some materials and time to fix it correctly. _________________ -Tony

Good day gentlemen (and ladies).
I need to determine if these parts need replacing, and I am unfamiliar with how they wear or when they need to be replaced. I don't want to do this again for 7-10 years if it can be helped, so please keep that in mind when judging condition.
I have a type 4 GE engine and a 6 rib transmission. If you need pictures of anything else, like the throw out bearing or related hardware, I can get those pics tonight.
Also, the bus has sat for so long in it's current position, I didn't notice a tree growing out and into it. lol

Lol thanks man! It's a panty-popper for sure. I have many, many good things in store for this bus this year after the engine install. _________________ -Tony

Tony
In rough order of increasing cost
1 Throw out bearing - you replace it, unless you know it to be under one year old. Cheap, and wear item.
2 Clutch disc - a careful inspection for fluid contamination, depth of lining (make about 12 measurements around radius and compare to new) and scuffing or chatter marks on the lining. If it is within 80% of new - reuse. Clutches last as long as you don't abuse them on these cars, with stock engines.
3 Clutch plate -clean it up, check the surface for flatness (spec?) and signs of chatter. If none, reuse. Carefully check each finger for 'springiness' to see if there are any 'outliers' but my guess is that is good to reuse. _________________ .ssS! |

Excellent advice, Abscate. Thanks!

8mm is spec on clutch discs for something. If you can get an 8mm wrench over the edge you may want to replace it.
I'd suggest just getting a new one and resurface the flywheel...new motor deserves a new clutch _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

Wilson says 7mm wrench is trash on the clutch disk. I've never been able to fit an 8mm around any disk I've had though. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

Bentley: "There should be at least 2.00 mm (about 1/16 in.) of friction material remaining above the rivet heads. Runout should not exceed 0.50 mm (.020 in.)".

Thanks T!
So, in my never-ending search to rescue 1978 Champagne Edition II's from returning to the earth (or meeting an untimely end with a crusher) I am going to look at this bad boy this evening with one of my Air-Cooled Partners in Crime:
My checklist:
Clothes to get dirty in: CHECK
Thin refrigerator magnet: CHECK
Trailer: CHECK
Cash: CHECK
I will report more on my findings this evening / tomorrow _________________ -Tony

Hey Gal! How are you doing buddy?
Yes we did an Oklahoma Bus Pull on April 20th...heh... and got it home yesterday evening. It's really complete, a spectacular bus. Dry frame, OG paint underneath. A/C is more complete than I've ever seen before.
That's Jared, who rode to the hospital in this bus when he was 5 years old with a broken arm. That's his 48-52 Ford Tractor, too. Really nice guy, it was a pleasure meeting him.
Champagne Sunsets, nothing like them in the world.
Barnacle'd all over, and very, very cool.
Chrome rear bumper! I made a promise to myself that none of these parts would be transferred to my bus.
We are going to get this one back up and running if the compression tests good. _________________ -Tony

I always like to see before and after photos, build threads, etc.
Brought home the new bus yesterday. Super stoked.
Came with A/C, as did the other Champagne passenger buses I have picked up. I always thought this view, with the rear seat down, is super cool.
Gonna pop off a door handle to get the key code. Off comes the card:
This bus came with a full set of brown leatherette covered interior and door panels. They were not all installed, which saved most of them from water damage!
A pile of dirty loot to sort.
Original jack in plastic bag, a major score:
Owner's manual, VW Warranty booklet, and instructions for whatever old stereo was in it.
Unobtanium: An original Champagne Edition middle seat kick panel, although it's classified under the 'Janky' category:
Now, the restoration segment of tonight's thrilling episode!
I pulled the dash cluster to give it a refresher. Unfortunately the seals on this bus bit the dust a long time ago, resulting in things being pretty gritty on the inside. I am not surprised
stinky:
a bunch of little bolts around the edges:
Apart she comes:
Really happy this was included. This is the before shot. On my bus, I popped the ring that hold the glass to the clock instrument. It's a shitload of work, prying that little ring off, tiny bit by tiny little bitty bit. So I cleaned just the outer face of this glass, and it's a heck of a lot better than it was.
It was really grimy. Now all I need is a new brake light lens, which coincidentally is the exact same on the 73/74 VW Thing. It's only $6, what are you waiting for!? http://www.thethingshop.com/LENS-BRAKE-WARNING-LIGHT/productinfo/113919232L/
Aaah...clear glass in the dash makes me a happy man. _________________ -Tony
