So info saw online supports 55reasons statement that 231-xxx model is DK as the manufacturer. Its standard Sears operation for the first three numbers are a manufacterer prefix.
Leaving shortly to go to the Geneva library to search the buisness directories. |

Research can be like that. But when you do find that little piece of the puzzle that makes the rest of the puzzle easier, it's a rush. That's why I keep doing it, despite the obstacles.
Don't give up! If I were living in the Chicago area like you are, I'd go down to the Sears headquarters and ask to speak to somebody in their public relations department. If anybody would know where the bodies were buried, they would. _________________ -- JLT

Iobviously you know more about research than me, I have the same interest, but not the knowledge of where to look for info. That sounds like a good idea and I would love to do that. Thanks for the lead. I will share any info I find.
What are the #s for your model #? |

As I said earlier, the VIN plate is missing on mine, but some trailers of the same model bear the model numbers 287.61830, 287.61530, 287.61961, and
287.61660. So "287" was probably Sears's supplier code. I hope that helps. _________________ -- JLT

Maybe someone has a number close to mine and knows what year theirs is. Mine is serial number 76XX. Possibly someone could shed some light. Thanks |

Post a pic of it. What's the model #/ what body style is it?
I would always be carefull postng full sr#'s anywhere as it is real easy to get titles for a trailer with just #s. Just a word of advice to anyone. |

That's definitely a 1950s trailer. I expect the model number to be something like 231-963 or maybe 231-96369. I don't know if you can actually get any information from the serial number itself, although it might be worth dropping an email to Sears with the serial and model number and seeing if they can tell you the actual year. (And if you do find out, let us know!) _________________ -- JLT

at's deffinetly a earier model, I am not sure when they stopped making them though. I suspect they were not made after the supplier switch , but that's just a hunch. I've never seen one titled after the 50s. |

We're restoring another Allstate trailer and I'm in need of a source for the rubber "biscuit" that sits above the coil spring. It measures around 5/8" thick and 2-1/4" in diameter.
I was thinking of a bayonet mount shock having something similar but I've not found something the right diameter.
What have others used? |

|

Well, folks, I've gone and done it. I've cobbled together a history of the Sears single wheel trailers from 1939 to around 1975, which is (I believe) when Sears stopped carrying them. It can be found at:
http://midtown.net/dragonwing/sears%20SWT.htm
If any of you have additions, corrections, etc., just let me know. _________________ -- JLT

Just checking in like I promised with an update. I have put several hundred miles on the trailer. And everything is still working great. I have taken it on the freeway several times and it does great even at 95MPH (only once to test it). Here's some pics of the finished product (also as promised).

Oh man thats one sweet combo there. I dont think youll have any wobble problems with that kind of rake to it.
Did you have all the stock brackets to mount it, or did ya fab some? Id like to see a pic of them, thats the one thing I dont have all of. Ive managed to mount mine to my '63 Biscayne I had, and now my '63 Corvair van as well. Despite not having all the mounts. But I see how the clamps Im missing may make mounting on my bug way easier. |

I just got mine drivable and took it to a show a few weeks ago. It rides great even on the freeway. Still trying to work out what lights I will be using and looking for the chrome moldings on the side. I think I will end up making those and would love to find a replacement ID tag (mine it a little ratty).

|
|
When I took my trailer out on a campout last weekend, something happened to me that never happened before in thousands of miles of use. I was maneuvering into a narrow slot, going backward and forward, and in the process the tire went flat. I think I must have been loading it in a sideways direction before the wheel had castered either in the fully forward or fully reverse direction, and the tire got side-loaded to the point where it broke the bead between the tire and rim. I pumped it back up and it held air all the way home.
Has this happened to anybody else?
I'm going to prevent this from happening in the future (I hope) by installing a tube in the tire, so that the connection between the tire and the rim isn't so critical. We'll see how that works out. _________________ -- JLT

I use a inner tube on mine. Won't have to worry about that. |
