Napa also sells very rigid Rubber tire flaps.. That would totally work for your application. |

I have a fabricator lined up to make some of these. I am just doing steel, but he says he can do aluminum also.
I will know this week what he wants for fabrication once he makes one.
They will be ready for the Solstice for sure Jason! _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia Hightop - NAHT

I finally got mine built and installed last week? 14 gauge stainless steel.
I used a Mk3 rubber floor mat for the rubber. I didn't follow the template either. And I didn't flip my template I made so the patterns in the rubber are different _________________ 1986 Canadian Syncro Westy TDI - 1989 Syncro Single Cab - 2001 Audi S4 - 1981 VW Caddy ABA - 1980 VW Caddy EV - 1973 VW T-181 |

Do you think I am ok using 10 gauge. I already have it purchased? Yours look great! Looks like nice vented rotors too! _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia Hightop - NAHT

I think 10 gauge is overkill but the spec says 3mm (~11 gauge). I don't see mine bending or going anywhere, and if it does, I probably have worse things to worry about.
Metal Supermarkets around 1900 south and 500 west has LOTS of remnant stainless for pretty cheap. I think the sheet I bought that is big enough for 3 sets cost me $20.
I'd be interested to know fabrication cost too, just so see if it's in line of what I think I could get it done for. He's going to need a pretty heavy duty brake to bend that stuff! Although it could be cut in sections and then welded together too. _________________ 1986 Canadian Syncro Westy TDI - 1989 Syncro Single Cab - 2001 Audi S4 - 1981 VW Caddy ABA - 1980 VW Caddy EV - 1973 VW T-181 |

I got the fabricator the template. He is thinking of 12 gauge steel to use. Somewhere around $125 for the pair complete. He has belting to use for the rubber protector. Here is his mock cut with a plasma cutter. Notice the jig he made to produce these quickly.
I ordered (2)two sets already. Once I see his build I will make them available to anyone at Syncro Solstice. Just let me know who is interested?
I will send pics once they are built. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia Hightop - NAHT

Here is one he wants me to get installed and check the fitment before he produces a few.
I am going to etch primer the steel then paint with bed liner protectant paint.
Once that is done I will post some finished pics.
He said he will sell these for $125 Painted with your choice of color. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Incorporating the CV protector and brake splash guard into one unit is also a good idea. |

Yup, available from numerous vendors, in stainless and with the brake splash shield.
All "for sale" posts should be to the classifieds unless in your signature line as shown below. |

Got 'em installed
They fit perfect. The only change we will probably make is to use (4)four attachment points on the rubber belting and use rivets instead of bolts.
We made (7)seven sets of these for now. So if you are interested, let me know. I am going to bring some to Syncro Solstice also.

Hey guys! I might be a little late to this party, but I made some today. I used Alistairs blog post (PDF) for an idea and plans, and cut a set of my own.
I took on empty one of these:

Cut the sides out (TOUGH plastic!):

Then cut to fit:

The brackets were still in there, and looked to be in good shape, So I drilled out the old rivets, and now they look like this:

Upload your pics to the samba gallery and use the samba link to post them. That way they will not disappear when the site you have them on goes away. |
Absoultely! See the link in my sig line and add it to yours to help promote this. _________________ 89 Syncro GL Westfalia 2.1 WBX/WBXaustSS

Ok, I'm an idiot.
Yesterday I got my dashboard back together, and I moved my wheels full lock-to-lock to check out my clever boot protectors.................
Yeah. We can file this one under 'Good Idea At The Time'.
The plastic is a little too stiff, and when I trimmed it to fit, it does not offer as much protection as it should.
However, since a little bit of something is better than a whole lot of nothing, I will leave these guards in place until I can make something that is functional. _________________ 1990 Feldjäger Syncro AAZ

I would be surprised if the plastic flaps work long. The flexible rubber ones start to tear at the bottom at the radius rods and at the top at the drop link, they also wear from rubbing on the axle while driving at speed.
The rubber ones last for years and they persist even while damaged. |
