With the end of this very long project in site, I've decided it's time to officially document some of the build on the Samba. So, here goes...

I've owned this car since Sept. 96 when I purchased it from a woman who had just moved to UT from CA. In fact, the black and yellow CA plates were still on the car (and yes I still have them). I drove the car in the Spring and Summer for many years before deciding to go through a complete resto.

Here's what it looked like when the madness started...

Disassembly

Only accident damage on the entire car was a brush with another vehicle on the passenger side. I carefully removed the full area surrounding the old repair.

Pan halves had some surface rust, but condition was too good to replace with aftermarket metal.

Media blasted the body and pan.

Stay tuned...more on the build tomorrow.

Metal work was minimal. Just a little repair to the original rear fenders...

When it came time for body and paint, I debated whether to attempt it myself or shell out the $$$$ for an experienced painter. I had experience with body work, but not shooting color. Ultimately, I decided to shell out the money and was not disappointed.

At the time I was making my color choice, there were red 67s popping up everywhere, so I went a different direction - L390 Gulf Blue.

About the same time, the pan was shipped off to be powder coated. The battery strap and a couple of other parts compliments of a very talented local club member -thanks Rob.

At the advice of Art at ACE, we cut access windows in tunnel for ease of cable access and to weld/reinforce the clutch cable tube.

here are a couple of pics after final adjustment of the seat tracks - had to lower them significantly. The seats are not finished in these pictures, but you get the idea of the interior color and how the Recaro's will look with the headrests deleted.

Thanks for the kind words. I wish I could say this project was one of those knock it out in a year or less deals, but it isn't. Those first dismantle shots were taken in 2005, so this has been a looooong project. Life has gotten in the way more than once...

I think I found some old pics of your car at Rocky Mountain Motorworks (Berg Cruise 2000), were you there?

Jerami - yes I was. Great memories of that trip, the shows (RMMW and BOR) and most important the great people met along the way. Quite a few of us joined the cruise as the group came through Utah. Were you on the cruise?
