I have an early 70's fuel injected super beetle, the fuel pump doesn't engage when the key is turned on. The pump works when bench tested but isn't getting power via ignition system. Could it be a relay? If so, where would I find it?

Oh and the pump should not power up until the key is in the "start" position.

Thanks! I'll check it when I get home. When I turn the key to the start position, all quiet when I would expect to hear the pump load the system. The motor turns but no fuel. Is this relay the same for starting the car? If so, I may have other problems.

Hank_vw: As far as the year of the car, I'm still trying to nail that down as I'm missing a little paperwork. The vin # says it's a 71 (111), the horizontal spare says it's a super and I suspect it's a transplant from Canada.

The DR is really dedicated to the FI system, so no it will not help you start the car.

My friend said the same thing about the year and he thought injection came out in 74. I took the vin off the dashboard, maybe it's an imposter. Would there be another number somewhere else to confirm?

L-Jetronic came on the bug in 1975 (fuel injection ) in the U.S.
the computer and double relay are Behind the rear seat back and Not
under the seat.

poor place from the factory to put it especially on the convertables.
But then again the harness is only so long Rolling Eyes

You can see it thru the rear window (driver side)
if its a factory FI system. Shocked

You need to fold the seat back forward and usually remove the cardboard cover over the right fenderwell. Is the little brown wire attached to the negative battery terminal?

Found it. I didn't see the brown ground, that could be the problem right there. I'll when I have more light tomorrow. I also need to change the soft fuel lines, they leaked when I tested the pump.
I hope it's one of the 2, bad wire or bad relay, then I can move to next inevitable problem, right?

Well all I have now is a VIN # and a car with fuel injection. Maybe the VIN plate is a fake. When I search the VIN, it says the car is a 1971 -UK Historic Tax Class. That's all I got.

There's a sticker under the dash for a stereo that was installed and it 's place called Ralph's in Vancouver, BC. I'm pretty sure this car is a transplant from the Great White North, that would explain the Eberspacher heater in the trunk.

Right, remember Fi runs at big pressure and flow so a little leak turns into a major fire in the blink of an eye, change all the soft lines before you do too much more.
